Quadcopter build

okay so I changed my mind on buying a ready built bind and fly quad like the Blade MQX... I made the decision to just build one myself

so let the fun begin!

first wave of parts:
*Chassis
*3 axis control board (and programmer for it)
*quad ESC power distribution board
*bullet connectors
*PLENTY of heat shrink
*battery straps
*nylon fasteners

threw the chassis together tonight and mounted the electronics in the center

still have to order:
*motors
*ESCs (and programmer for them)
*props
*batteries
*receiver

a few more weeks and this thing might be taking it's maiden flight! it's a slow build; nothing I'm rushing into

I find your rc threads interesting to say the least, I myself used to love the hobby world but found it to be very pricey. Looks cool you gonna post some vids when your done?

yeah I'm going to try to shoot video during it's maiden flight, whenever that might be. it's a long time from being done, because as you said, it's a very pricey hobby to say the lest

made a little more headway on this thing today

I fought for HOURS last night trying to let the programmer to function correctly and communicate with my PC so I could program the control board. after trying almost everything I could think of, it ended up being a stupid little setting I made in Windows

so now that THAT is figured out, I just have to stop spending money on my other RCs for a little while and actually focus on getting this thing done

well now it's just a waiting game again. I've got motors, ESCs, props, batteries, a low voltage alarm, receiver and connector leads, and a few other things on order now, and it'll hopefully all be in by next weekend and I'll finally get a chance to fully assemble this thing!

well I can't believe it, but this stupid little thing actually took flight for the first time today after work! after a little dialing in and adjusting, it's surprisingly pretty stable! I'll be messing with it after work every day if weather permits (it's that time of the year here in Florida... afternoon showers...), and will try and get some videos soon to post up

well I flew it during lunch today, no video... flew it again at the end of the day in the parking lot at work, no video. flew it around in the front yard after I got home for the day, and I propped my phone up on the steps and got some video keep in mind, this IS my first ever flying RC, so my piloting skills are a little rusty... and the quad needs to be dialed in a little more too; it's a little wobbly at times

well I crashed today got cocky and got some speed, couldn't recover, and slammed into the side of my house and it fell into the bushes...

somehow all that broken as a prop and my home brewed plastic center cover (cracked it, not destroyed; it's still usable). I have plenty of spare props (I actually bolted a new one back on and was flying again in less than a minute), and the center cover was specifically intended to take the blows like it did instead of letting the electronics under it get damaged, so it serves it's purpose!

Dang video was awesome, that thing sounds loud too! You can expect some carnage but whatever everything is replaceable for a price

Well this thing just undertook a MAJOR overhaul!

New flight control board, new ESCs, slightly smaller props, twice as large of a battery, and a sweet new Chinese take-out box canopy

Should be able to capture some air footage now that it's much more stable and controllable!

I don't know if you still have this or not but if it becomes 100% reliable you could get some cool wheelin shots Little more work and you got one of these. . . http://vimeo.com/13774420
