After my letting my truck sit for a little over a year I have decided to get a blueprinted engine and be done with it. My question to the members of this forum, local to NW Washington State, is there a machine shop that specializes in rebuilding the 22RE that is known for really good work?

 

I have heard of a shop in edmonds that does really good work and specializes in 22rs and re's, they rebuilt my buddys but i can think of the name, and not sure if billybobs offroad does it but im sure they would and i would definitely reccomend them if they do

Unless you're getting into some real hot stuff you don't need a machinist who 'specializes' in old Yota motors. An engine is an engine. Very specific knowledge only comes into play when a particular engine was manufactured with defects and is rare to come by, you're looking at repurposing the engine to do a job it wasn't intended for or your getting into fairly extreme performance. For a street vehicle it is quite rare to come across an oddball an experienced machinist hasn't crossed or isn't able to apply their trade to.

Automotive machinists in general are engine specialists. So long as the individual is competent you're in good hands. I was very satisfied with Engine Machine Services.

 

Thanks for the link, jimbyjimb. My email routed the response to spam, so I am sorry I delayed a bit. Let me ask you this, if I may: how much was the rebuild? My truck isn't much to look at, but I don't mind spending a little to get it on the road again. However, I've already dumped roughly $600 into it before I realized how far gone the engine is (timing chain slipped, engine has a bent valve or two).

 

Well, that depends on the condition of your short-block. Do you need resizing/resurfacing, line boring, cylinder boring, headwork... I'd say 600 minimum for a short block in excellent condition if you do your own assembly. 800-1000 is more realistic.

If you do go rebuild, do yourself a favor and step the cam up to at least .410 lift. Helps out on the freeway and doesn't hurt mileage or driveability.

 

I am going to assume that the condition is "eh" to "poor" at best. The oil and coolant are staying in their proper places in respect to the head gasket, but at 215k miles I would just prefer have it completely rebuilt. It's been parked for over a year now, and I am not keen on it ever going down again.
I was looking at an outfit in Moses Lake (I forget the name, but I found them through some toyota 4x4 forum) that rebuilds the 22re with an aftermarket head and the RV cam. It was roughly $1500 including the trip back for the core. I just don't have the tools/hoist/time/energy etc to do the job myself. I am forced to humbly acknowledge I am not equipped to pull the engine myself, so it will need to be full service.

Get a brand name on that head. Some aluminum heads are real dogs. Sure it's not a rebuilt stock head?

Anyway 1500 all said and done is a pretty good deal if you ask me. Just be sure they use reputable brands. I'm no snob but quality in and you'll get a 250-300k motor in return if you do your part.

 

My mistake. The rebuilt engine is $1500 + tax and freight. I wish that included install. The guy told me the brands when I called and asked about them, and if I recall they were good stuff. The head alone was about $250-$300.
My hope was someone local would just rebuild what I have for less. Save me the hassle.
