85 fj60 Build Thread
Hey guys, so this truck right here is my dad's, we scored it off a guy who had it stolen. These guys rolled it down the hill, after breaking the back passenger window. Apparently they then tried to start it to no avail, even after pouring gas in the carb haha serves them right.(Oh and another thing, they left two pretty sweet jerry cans too!) Anyway we got it for dirt cheap and all it needs is a new fuel pump, smog pump, a few new brake lines, back passenger window and some general TLC. Currently sitting in my dads driveway, hasn’t moved under its own power in a year and a half however, he has started it after replacing with stock mechanical fuel pump.
PO had gotten a dent in door as well as tailgate, and replaced both with rusty stuff? We were all like WTF? so we got both barely dented unrusty doors from the guy.
Some shots of the engine bay:
So my dad just recently started doing repairs on weekends, heres a few photos of the progress:
Crank Pulley off:
Pulley bolt and 45 mm socket:
Camshaft and crank timing gears:
Crank pulley, water pump and replacement:
Fan:
Smog pump:
Timing Gear cover (needed a new gasket and seal around crank, to be painted with high heat primer and high gloss high heat):
That’s all, until next time..

Heres a few pics with the fan and belts on (green line or something; made by Gates). All that is left is to put oil, coolant, and upper and lower radiator hoses. He will be reman. a leaky power steering pump (new seals and bushings, and new bearing for the pulley as the old bearing seized up) and replacing all vaccuum hoses everwhere! One thing that I thought I would share was about the Smog pump, the hoses that came with it weren't the right size, he needed a inside diam 0f 7/8. He was hard pressed to find that size in anything other than coolant hosing, so he found a shop that does hoses for all kinds of stuff, hydraulics, etc etc. The hose he got is oil and gas resistant, and it is like steel braided or steel banded and then covered with rubber, sort of like how tires are made. Anyway he had to use a mitre saw to cut it, and the wire inside messed up his wire cutters! so you know that is some tough hose.(15$ a foot it better be).
