The "Go Anywhere a 4x4 Would" Prerunner
I'm new to the forum and just thought I would post up my play toy. It was/is my first/only vehicle, it's a 01 Tacoma Prerunner 3.4 V6 with rear E-locker. It's been a great little truck, but my big complaint was the fact that it was 2wd. Here it is shortly after I bought it with a badass (so I thought at the time) set of 265/75/16 Terra Turds
My next big purchase was a set of wheels

I do dig the new wheels though. I have seen some 2wd that will go places some 4wd will. But they were about $100k worth of truck and it would take about 30mph more speed....

Next I ended up putting a sound system in it. I did a Dual 7in flip-up DVD player, a 10in JL sub, two Pioneer 6.5in speakers inside of a custom box and a 250 watt amp
It's nothing major, but it gets the job done
After gettin stuck a few times and catching immortal hell from friends about having a nice lift 2wd truck with a expensive set of mud terrains, I started looking for parts to do a 4x4 conversion. i had to search for a while but I ended up with
1) front differential, spindles, etc... from a 98 Tacoma with manual hubs
2) 340F transmission/transfer case/shifters from a 97 4Runner (had some issues, to be discussed later)
3) a center console from toyota
4) shortened rear drive shaft and locate a front shaft
This was tough and took a lot of searching, but with the help of a few buddies keeping an eye out for me it all started coming together. I had around $1500 in the conversion between parts and installation. I got the truck for 11K, 4x4's the same year/mileage were selling for 16-18K at the time, so I would say I came out to the good on that one. Plus with have manual transfer case and manual hubs I dont have to worry about things not working when I need them most.
Here is a pic post 4x4 swap, with the manual hubs and I also went with a different wheel/tire setup. Pro Comp's and 32x11.50R15 BFG All-Terrains

I put a set of 33x12.50r15 Goodyear Duratracs on it, this has been the best set of tires I have ever owned.
I saw a big difference with the tires and made the choice to gear it. I went with 4.56 Yukons front and rear with full bearing kits front and rear. I was hesitant about it, but it made a huge difference and has been well worth the money
My next project was armor. I started at the front and worked my way back. Everything was built my M.O.B.S. Fab in Concord, NC.

Next on my to-do list at the time was to go ahead and upgrade the front suspension, so I did the Toytec Ultimate Kit. I opted for the 650lbs coils/silver. They ride like a caddy!
I also did a HID/Retrofit conversion with 5K lights

Keep in mind this is just a fast forward of the last two years... I took my time due to a limited budget, but from here on out are things that happened within the last month or so.

It's all good, you would be amazed at how ticked some of the 4x4 guys around town get when you talk a lil crap about a Prerunner that will go further than their 4x4

Some of the projects that I just got down in the last month or so are
Painted my tool box black. $15 rattle can job and is holding up great! cleaned it off really well, a good coat of self etching primmer and several coats of rustoleum.
I put slotted and drilled rotors on the front, with a set of Carquest BCD pads. Also did new drums and shoes in the rear. After putting all the extra weight from the bumpers, winch, sliders, etc it didn't have anywhere near the stopping power it used to have. Now she will damn near stop on a dime!

Just the other evening I got some 2nd gen badges from a buddy. So I took them and painted them semi-gloss black and was able to get them put on this weekend.
Now for this week I should have my hands full... I have a bunch of goodies in my garage waiting to be put on. I got a set of Icon UCA's and also new decals for the rear quarter panel

I'm not worried about a 2wd doing what a 4wd can, I raced 7s and have ran some trails using only 2wd and a locker. Just try to remember a lot of guys (and gals) on this site have ran trails that a 2wd wouldn't get 10 feet down regaurdless of the build, you won't suprise many... just sayin'. I retracted my words because I didn't (and still don't) know where this build is going. But it does look good!

The SAS will come one day. I am just going to wait till I'm out of school and I'm able to afford something that I can daily drive incase I break something. I was really into the idea a while back till I did some of the research on what it would cost... but when I do SAS I want to do a right hand drive/gear driven case adapter with 4.70's in the case and a FJ80 e-locker axle w/ 4.56 and a manual hub conversion.
