And 5.29s w/ an auto on the highway...don't know if I'd do that, but that's just me. I'm sure when you're pulling a loaded trailer behind you it'd be ok, but I'm curious to hear how your 4Runner will do going down the interstate @ 70mph without a trailer...seems like the engine would be screaming.
they sold 4.56's with the auto and an e-locker. I think that was after they dropped the 5 speed and the 4 cylinder. Quick way to get more "power" so you can keep up with the competition without a major revision. They did this on the previous gen as well with the introduction of the 4.88's towards the end of the generation.

You must have missed my previous post about the stupid tall OD in the A/Ts. The KM2s measure out at 33.3" tall tire and 5.29s is perfect for the A/Ts. I will still be turning less RPMs at the same speed than a manual truck with 4.56s and 33s.

I did read that about the OD. I agree, it IS crazy tall. I just hear more guys going w/ 4.88s & 35s on a daily driver V6 auto 3rd gen, than I do 5.29s & 35s on the same vehicle. Nonetheless, when you get the new gears, I look forward to hearing how the 5.29s and the new 33.3s handle at freeway speeds. Definitely keep us posted.

Oh and a word of caution - I have heard of axle codes being incorrect in 3rd gens. Owner opens his 3rd member to install a locker and while he's there, he checks to see what gear ratio he has only to find the gear code on the vehicle does not match the actual gear installed.

Granted, you'll know exactly what gear ratio you have once you tear into the 3rd member...I simply want to make sure you know what you have before you tear into it. Elocked 3rd gens are hard enough to find in good shape as is...add 4.56s to that rarity and I say you struck gold.

Funny you're stepping up to 5.29s...I'd kill just for a set of 4.56s.

I think the reason you see guys going 4.88s with 35s is because they are misinformed about what to run in general. I couldn't even imagine running only 4.88s with 35s with the A/T. I can understand it with the manual tranny though.

FWIW, when you compare 4.30s vs. 4.56s there is such a subtle difference that its not worth the time to swap them. I am very confident that I have the 4.56s. All of the RPM calculator readings tell me they are 4.56s. My GPS also tells me that my speedo is spot on, so based on everything I see its definitely 4.56s.

5.29s would actually be perfect with 32s with the A/T. Even then, it still leaves you with lower than M/T rpms at cruising speeds. And remember, the M/T gets better mileage running at a higher RPM than the A/T does.

Every Toyota motor built from 1979-2004 is more efficient running at 3000+ rpms than it is at 2500 rpms. The 3.4L is no exception. They designed the power band and torque curve to work better and more efficiently at higher rpms.

I have no doubt that 5.29s are the way to go if you don't want your A/T to constantly hunt for 3rd gear.

No factory 4.56's in a V6 3rd gen. If it's an auto V6 e-locker it could be 4.10 or 4.30, most likely 4.30. 4.30's were part of a package with 16" wheels and the bigger front brakes.

The auto's get better mileage than the 5spds-I've had both. My 5spd with 4.88's and 33's turned more rpms than the auto's with 4.88's and 33's. But with gears and bigger tires, gas mpg is gonna suck either way. My 5spd with 4.88's and 33's would pull the heck out of a 3800 pound popup camper and 3 people in the 4runner with it loaded down too-it would pull all that at any speed you wanted to go.

My current '96 project has 35's, auto, and 4.30 gears and it's fine, 4.88's would be better, but it's not worth the $$ to regear it in my opinion for what I'm using it for.

I PROMISE you they made 4.56 lockers. www.car-part.com, search 4Runners for differentials, you can select that option and then proceed to buy one. I came within a few days of buying one on there for my 90, but decided I needed the money for something else.

I didn't say they didn't-I said no 4.56's in a V6 3rd gen, you could get a 4.56 e-locker in a 2.7 3rd gen-Steve Schaefer bought his 2.7 3rd gen like that.

I've regeared a couple Elocker 3rds that had factory 4.56s. Both came out of 4runners.

But it honestly doesn't mean much to me since I will be going 5.29s anyway.

The above is true, the only way to get a factory 4.56 e-locker is from a 2.7
4Runner, couldn't get one in a 3.4 4Runner.

So, I went to the CO 4runner Jambo this weekend. I sponsor this event every year, so I always try to attend.

I took the boys out and we spent a great five days in Buena Vista. We did a lot of fishing and ran Tin Cup Pass all the way over to Taylor Reservoir and then back over Cottonwood Pass. Most of the weekend we were by ourselves just exploring the easier trails in the new 4runner.
