Fully boxed frame. Same platform as the Frontier's, Titan's and Armada's.

4.0 engine is a bored out version of the 3.5 VQ that they use in just about every car (350Z, G35, Maxima, Altima, Quest, etc...) and the 6 speed tranny is a variant of the 350Z's.

- No separate rear heater, it works with the front one;
- No opening rear window (although mine is broken);
- Rear tailgate shocks mounting points are on dangerously thin sheetmetal. I was forcing the tailgate up and the sheetmetal was moving ;
- Rocker panel clearance still doesn't match the 4Runner's;

What I liked :

- Great engine/tranny combo
- 42:1 crawl ratio
- Lockable rear diff (I don't have it)
- 32s
- Discs all around
- Polyvalent cargo area

Although at the moment, I'm leaning towards keeping my current rig. I do not NEED a new truck, really. This one still fulfills my needs.

Kinda weird not to be bored after 7 years.
I think you know what you need to do. Just do the timing belt, and keep your rig. I personally think you will be happier in the long run. Nissan just doesn't have the build quality that Toyota does, and although the Titans and Frontiers and Armadas (ad nauseum) look good new, will the they hold up over time... Nissan may be stepping it up in recent years, but they still have a long way to go to catch up to Toyota.

You are gonna regret that move. Good by 4runner hello soccer mom mobile. I hope you don't get the bright yellow one either.

Ok so I am being a little harsh, but geez man listen to yourself and thing about who you are telling it to.

Now come on... Poser mobile? At least it has all the relevant goodies a real 4x4 needs.

And no, I'm not getting an FJ unless they offer it with a part time t-case + manual tranny.

no really i know the new ones look good. but so do the new dodge trucks but you know how that goes. looks goes up, quality = piss poor.. well for dodges i mean. nissans can hold up on every day driving i know a few people with them and they are over 200k miles with relatively few problems but as far as off roading goes. cant beat a yota and chevy. imo... get rid of that yota and get another one! thats a viable option.

Well, if I was to get a Toyota, my only option would be a 2000 because it's the last year for manual trannies.

That, or a newer taco, but the one I'd like (double cab short bed off road pkg) is not available in Canada.

And the Tacoma is WAY overpriced, and not as practical as an SUV for my needs.

So I don't have a lot of options here... aside from keeping the 4runner of course.

why is it a big deal to have a manual with a full time t-case? i think the auto only gets like 1 or 2 mpg more.

whats wrong with an auto?? i have the double cab but the basic sr-5 4x4 (not the trd which to me is overated) and it does fine. just change the tranny fluid every 15-20k miles

Ill drink to that.

Got a chevy with 200k miles, worked hard as hell and that truck drives great. I personally don't care much for Nissans. My friend had a titan and had one of the first lifted ones. He had the dealer do his lift (filthy rich guy), lots of problems even doing moderate wheeling.

Have you looked in to a used 4th gen 4runner? Thats going to be my next rig... or a bmw 330ci =)

I hate automatics with a passion. So until I'm very old, much grumpier than now or looking for a huge ass tow rig to tow a fifth wheel, I will NEVER have an automatic vehicle.

And I dunno about MPGs, but the manual gets worse mileage by at least 1l/100km, both in the city and highway. So I'm NOT getting that. And frankly, I'm not too sure the FJ's styling will still be cool in a couple of years.

Seems like my 99 is forever young.

Automatic only. No go.

My dream truck is a manual diesel powered Prado. Yummy.

Well, yeah...

I looked on an Xterras board, and it seems like they have a lot of issues with bottoming out the rear suspension. Sucks.

Maybe the off road one with Bilsteins doesn't do that, I dunno.

I own a 01 frontier as my DD and I love it (yes it is Yellow). the whole reason I got it rather than the Taco was the price (Frontier 01 crew cab 70k =Taco 99 ext cab 90k). While the quality of the interior is a little cheaper than the toyotas I know of many nissans that have gone well over 250k miles. They are almost to the level as toyota but just a little short
The new engine and tranny are amazing - I test drove a new fronty when they came out
The only other thing to consider (and I know this first hand) is that the aftermarket for serious off road products is VERY limited.

Ive rented 2 Xterras (04 & 06) from Enterprise rent a car for business trips before.

all years have very "blah" interiors, but the newer models 2005-07 (4.0L engine) I really liked the power (250hp-261hp/270tq). Good engine, and had really good acceleration. Thats about all I liked about it.

I hope you wern't talking about the Hardbody's and early Pathfinders. They were both well built and durable and just as good as Toyotas. I have not been impressed with Nissan since then though. That is why i got a Tacoma instead of a Frontier when I replaced my Hardbody.

Those were the last of the good 'uns! Those older hardbodys and Pathfinders were pretty tough, as well as the early Nissan mini trucks. But the newer stuff (90's on) just are not made as well, as far as my experience goes...

You came to a toyota forum and asked what was better-what did you think we were gonna say?

Honestly nothing can compare to toyotas quality-they also use one of the strongest auto transmissions-I have a 96 T100 with almost 200k on the same 4 speed auto trans the runners used of that era.

You dont need to use premium gas in an FJ, if you do use reg its fine-not gonna knock and ping and even if your hp dropped a little bitty bity who cares-its to small to worry about.

You want my honest advice? A nissan isnt nearly as good as a toyota is or will ever be, they are better than the big 3 but toyota still is king. You wan an xterra aint no one gonna stop ya, but you will find out later just how good it really is. My t100 is 11 and runs like brand new with only minor maintinence.
