Didn't they make the newer Gen 4RNR with a manual the first year?

Actually, I asked what were your thoughts.

Being a Toyota board doesn't prevent unbiased thinking (to an extent).

And I'm fully aware of Toyota's track record. Mine is STILL rock solid. Just looking at eventual options. And no, 4th gens weren't made with a manual.

Here's what i want :

I think I'm gonna keep it. If I switch, I'll get a double cab previous-gen Tacoma.

I love those.

You have a lot of good running left in that 99. Mine has 310 000 km on it now. Body still looks great (very little rust, though i do undercoat it). All I have done is the timing belt, the brakes, the rear axle seal (3 times...grrrrr) and the starter. The truck is as tight as a drum. By the way, I am in sales and regularly am 1000 km away from home with the truck. I wouldn't do that unless I was 100% confident in the rig.

Give a few more years, then maybe Toyota will wake up and give us a TD Tundra with a stick!

I am a 99 4runner owner (5sp, elocker) who just purchased an 07 Xterra off road. My runner is nearing the end of its life and I needed a replacement. Criterea for the new ride was body on frame construction, manual transmission and four doors, all non-negotiable. My choices, that I found, were the Xterra or the wrangler unlimted, and after driving both I chose the Xterra. So far I am well pleased with the Xterra, good build quality, great engine and 6 speed tranny. How does it compare to my 4runner? There are some features on the 4runner I miss on the Xterra; 2 function power window switches, rear heater, etc but all in all I'm happy with my new vehicle. I have no had a real chance to off road the Xterra yet since I live in Colorado and am waiting for spring. The Xterra has been well reviewed in terms of off road performance (elocker, part time xfer case, clutch cancel, etc) but I was and continue to be impressed with my 4runner so I am a little nervous. Interesting thread since I recently made the same decision, looked at the current 4runner but with no manual tranny and more on "road features" was never really in the hunt. The FJ cuiser was tempting but my family of four needs a corresponding number of doors. I plan on hanging on to my 4runner as it is an awesome vehicle, I can only hope the Xterra lives up to the off road standard set by the 4runner. But to me, the Xterra really was the only choice to replace my 4runner in todays market.

Bingo. Even if I don't switch NOW, I'll have to someday.

And now that I know that double cabs only came in autotragic, I'm left with like no other options than an Xterra eventually.

Why do you want a stick so bad? I have driven alot of different cars, owned 1 with a stick for a long time, when I got an automatic I thanked god that I didnt have to play with the gears in traffic anymore.

Offroading stick vs auto, I like the auto alot better, no stalling out, no trying th choose my gearing, makes it easy. Plus an auto toyota is very well built, like I said I got 200k on mine, no rebuilds and it wont need any...

Just imho...

Man, I truly hate automatics. The way they downshift lazily when you step on it, the way you're not in the correct gear exiting a turn unless you mash the gas, then by the time it downshifts and finally accelerates, it's too late...

I can't stand them. I really can't. They're no fun. I'd rather clutch in/out during rush hour traffic just to be able to select my own gear myself.

My Pathfinder was an automatic, and when I bought my 4Runner in manual (1st manual vehicle), I was like ?whoa, what have I been missing!!!?.

An automatic :
- Guzzles more gas (objective)
- Costs more when you buy the vehicle (objective)
- Slows the vehicle down (objective)
- Is boring (subjective)

Why would I want that?
