Hey all,
I was just wondering, what is your RPMs at 60mph with a cold engine? On my 2nd gen, it's close to 3,000 until my engine warms up. Is this normal? I know that the 2nd gen (maybe others) have some weird feature in that O/D won't work untill the engine is warm. Isn't 3000 RPMs too high for my Runner to be with O/D off? Seems to me like 3000 RPMs is in the 2nd gear range. I dunno. My tranny has been a weirdo for the last year, so maybe it's not suppose to do that.
Well, thanks all. Have fun.

Mine is at like 2000, maybe less even....
btw- you have a 2wd 2nd gen???? I have never seen/heard of that before???/ Maybe someone can correct me?? I know when I was searching for my 2nd gen runner a few years back, I thought they only made 4wd 2nd gens....

I don't know if it's normal, mine does it, and my tranny seems to be alright. When it's cold, sometimes when trying to hold 55 or 60mph on a hill it'll stay over 3000 till it gets to the mid point on the temp guage... then drop to the 2000 range... it's like it stays in 2nd... I hope it is normal because mine always does it until warm.

Saving up for a 4x4 Runner or truck now though. Your RPMs sure are a lot lowere than mine with a cold engine! Mine really sucks up the gas too as it takes about 5 minutes before it finally goes into O/D.
Well, thanks. Have fun.

Well, his engine is alot more powerful than our 2nd gen. I know that my 92 runs around 2500 RPMs going 60, and exactly 3000 when going 70. Very noisy. My 2000, however, runs at around 2000 RPMs when going 70.

I'm with UK on this one. I wouldn't recommend stretching out the engine when it's cold like that. I'm sure the engines can take it okay and I'm sure many people do this, but I'm also pretty sure it has to be harder on it and cause somewhat accelerated wear. However, we have Toyotas so it's all moot anyway. Just kidding!
I personally have never been above 50 that I can recall when it is cold, so I can't give any figures. By the time I get to the highway, it is at least halfway warmed up. I guess I like to take care of what I have . . . and then I go beat it up off-road!
I usually let it warm up for at least a minute if it's real cold out. However, I have read 2 trains of thought on this on which is better--either let it warm up or start driving. I guess to each their own. The manual (at least mine does) suggests wait at least 10 seconds after you start it before you take off when it's warm out. I would have to infer that it would suggest waiting proportionately longer if it's cold. (Am I still on topic here?!)

Hey all. Thanks for all the help.
I try to let it warm up some before I drive, but most of the time I'm running late to bring my bro to school. So, It usually doesn't get much of a chance to warm up. Maybe time for one of those remote starter thingies.....
Does anybody have some sort of chart that has the RPMs in each gear for a 2nd gen? My Runner has the smaller tires too, so that may make some difference. 3000 seems a bit high for being in 3rd gear. Am I right? Whenever I am driving at around 60mph and turn off the O/D RPMs go from 1900 up to about 2500 (i think). This seems to be a more reasonable 3rd gear RPM. I dunno, I'm starting to get a bit confused on this.
Well, thank again all. Have fun.
