wont move in drive

i have looked through out the threads and i havent found anything that seems to fit my problem. when i start the yota i have to put it into 1st gear for it to actually move. then shift into 2nd and then drive. but as soon as i put it into 2nd or drive it feels very sluggish. idn if its the TV cable but i will push the throttle all the way down and i wont get 2000 rpms. and the acceleration is very slow. but once i hit about 65 to 75 miles per hour and i push the throttle completely down it will downshift but wont do it at low speeds. im going to change the tranny fluid and filter and check the speed sensor tomorrow so hopefully that works...any suggestions guys, anything that im missing

I think you are starting in the right place by draining and changing fluids and filter. Sorry I do not have any great advice, I do wish you luck though.

Does this happen in the mornings when you first start it up? I remember reading somewhere that our trannys take alot of volts to work normally. Possibly change out your battery?

let me guess. you're that type of guy who does start n take off?

if that's the case, learn to let it warm up a bit before taking off. Usually i let my truck sit running for a min or so then drive in the mornings. I learned this lesson from my previous pickup. After that, i've never had another problem again.

Your transmission isn't acting like that because you didn't warm it up enough. Something's wrong w/ it. Mine can sit at a cold airport for 3 weeks, start right up and go no problem. Auto trannies are very complicated and although you may get some good ideas on here, I'll bet you'll need to take it in and have it looked at. My guess, your trans is about to grenade.

Mine shows a code every few months for one the "shift sel circuit b electrical"

Mine skips over 2nd gear, goes from 1st to 3rd, then 2 sedconds later to 4th.

I talked to a tech at a Yota dealer, and he said when they got a car in with that code they replaced the trans.

Ha! Like Im gonna shell out a zillion $$ for a highly annoying intermittent problem that actually adds 4 mpg.

Changing the fluid may help, if there is some trash in it, but it sould like the selinoids. which are not too hard to change if you already have the pan off. I think there is only 2 selinoids in the pan.

IIRC.... there were 4 solenoids, one was 1-2nd gear, another 4 3rd/4th, and a solenoid for tc lockup... cant remember what the 4th was for...

If Shift solenoid #1 fails you will have only 3rd and o/d available from the D position. If you have 1 and 2 from the L , 2 positions and normal 3 and o/d from D, then I'd suspect the #1 solenoid. If you are thinking of dropping the pan for a filter then remove and test the solenoids. Resistance should be 11 - 15 ohms across the coil (disconnected from the harness) applying 12 V should yield a crisp snap.
They aren't cheap and aftermarket ones are hard to find so buying one for a test is an expensive proposition.

Randy thats what im going to do im changing the fluid today and then changing the filter and trying to clean the sensor hopefully that will improve something..

but i have a feeling that it isnt the trannsmission thats about to go out because for me to accelerate normally i put it in 1st then to 2nd at about 2000 rpms then shift into drive..but its having problems dropping gear on a hard accerlation and will slow rev up to about 3k rpms

Mine is now fine, who knows how long that will last, just took it on a 1100 mile trip last weekend.

Mine has 270K on it, I know the trans cant last forever, but if it croaks, its getting a 5 speed.

I wanted that to start, but found a great deal on a Limited 4WD and they all came with slushboxes.

If my 1KZT ever shows up, Its gonna be diesel powered & 5 speeded ASAP.

I would do all your testing/driving with OD off, that will help eliminate an electrical problem.

Have you checked the solenoids?
