Won't let me shift into gear - or stays in park

My 91 4 Runner with auto will not let me put it into gear. I can if I use the shift lock override. What is going on? And, what can I do to fix this? HELP!!!!

I am shooting in the dark here so bear with me. I think there is a power switch much like a brake light switch attached to the brake pedal. It is attached there so that you have to press the brake pedal to release the shifter or engage the brake lamps. I dont know if there is two separate switches for the two or if the shifter release operates off of the brake switch. Info would be needed to back up my claim on that one. Or maybe there is a cable that is stretched within the shifting unit. Anyone else have any info on this.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I used this button to manually move the truck this morning (left the keys in the house) so I could disconnect the neon washer sprayer wiring. When my wife went to goto wor k it wouldn't go into gear. (without the override button) But after reading another post on this subject, I may have a blown fuse.... I'll check when she gets home!

I had this same problem just a few months back. My trailer wiring harness got torn, and blew the brake light fuse. Freaked me out. Check that.

Simple fix. Get an R150F and put in there. Never have that problem again...

Figured it out, it was the 10amp fuse that runs the guages, the door buzzer, the heater fan, the idiot lights, tach, and the transmission lock is loose.....
