Won't go into 4WD
1998 4-runner LTD. When button is pushed to engage 4wd, nothing happens. No light on dash, no sound from front diff., nothing. Have moved fwd. and backward, shifting on the fly, etc.. Shifting to 4-low works, but still in 2WD. Where do I start?

I found out you are supposed to take these push button systems and engage them monthly for 10 miles or so. Mine, 98 3.4 limited auto, had the same issue. I kept pushing the button randomly and it engaged. I went straight up in to the mountains and reminded it of its heritage and do so monthly now. No problems. I believe it was a dirty actuator from what I read.

Have you tried shifting the 4wd shifter? The multi-mode push button 4wd can be troublesome if it wasn’t used and maintained properly over the years.
If if you push the button, and you said it isn’t going into 4wd, the 4wd lights should blink as an error is occurring by not engaging.
If you have blinking 4wd lights!!!! Well then we can really get going on parts to test.

i'm not as familiar with a '98 since I have an '02 that i'm diagnosing right now, but the first thing would be to check the fuse. I'm fighting the flashing 4x4 light problem right now so my 4x4 pushbutton is useless right now as well.
Sounds like maybe the switch needs to be removed and checked for power and continuity. I'm not much help but this is a good place to start
