I want to prime the 3VZ on the engine stand so I can get the plugs and wires hooked up before I put it back in the vehicle. My 1/2" drill isn't really strong enough to turn it over enough. The only other thing stronger I have is an impact gun. I wasn't sure if the hammering action will hurt anything in the motor or not. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks.

 

The hammering might bang the internals into each other. I say dont do it.

 

I'm all confused now. I was talking to a friend tonight and he told me rotating the motor without plugs in it was a bad idea and bad for the motor and that it won't even prime the motor. WTF? I thought I read on here earlier this was the best way to prime it.

 

The impact WILL overtorque the front bolt. I would turn it by hand (ratchet wrench) to prime.

 

Woah. Last time I read, you have to turn it over for about 1.5 minutes. I get sweaty and out of breath after 6 motor rotations. I could never do it that much by hand!

 

i thought that to prime it you disconnect the coil and crank? thats using the starter to spin it.....

 

yep that works make sure the plugs are out though very important

 

I was the one that mentioned it... just make sure your plugs are out so you dont build any compression (easier to turn over and no load on the bearings with no compression). I used a good sized drill connected to a hacked up extension holding the socket. Be sure you put the oil sender back in before you do this to avoid spewing oil all over your new motor like I did .

You will be able to feel the moment your bearings get any oil pressure but keep spinning it with the drill for another 30-40 sec to get the oil up to the cam bearings. You are going to need to use a drill for sure since spinning it by hand wont get you enough speed to pump oil. If you want to fill the oil pump from the back side just pull the oil sender and fill that hole it screwes into slowly. That hole will route oil into the back side of the pump where the actual pump gears are.

Thats what I did only I used a different drill and I was not nice enough to use the vacuum to keep it cool

Where you also able to tell the moment it had oil pressure? Mine probably picked up 20% in speed once it had oil circulated.

 

Yeah, the drill definitely had less of a labored sound to it after a few minutes. When I put it in the vehicle and turned the motor over, it instantly had oil pressure, so it obviously worked.
