Will a Double Din Headunit fit?

I bought a 7" screen double din headunit and tried to install it to find that it doesn't fit, (screen is 7", so the unit is like 7.5" wide).

I have seen 4Runners on websites like Cardomain with double din's in them. I think as long as I stick with a smaller screen size, it will fit (like 6.1").

I am looking at the Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD right now. Some websites, such as sonicelectronix.com say the 4Runner wont fit ANY double dins, others like crutchfield.com says that this unit will fit. I have seen a 4Runner (2000) with this exact unit in it. Mine is a 1999.

Any thoughts or comments on the fitment and/or the quality of this unit?

Here is a pic of it installed in a 2000.

I don't know anything about the Pioneer unit, but a double din head unit will fit.
Not all will fit, but quite a few.

Here's a pic of the kenwood double din I just installed:

Double DIN will fit. I have the Pioneer Premier AVIC-F90BT. Crutchfield said it wouldn't fit. It looks pretty much the same. I don't have any experience with the unit you are talking about, but I love mine! In my experience Pioneer makes a good product.

I have a Pioneer Avic-F700-BT Double Din Nav/Headunit in my '96 4Runner & it fits perfect. I used the stock brackets & a wiring harness from Walmart. No other installation kit was required.

I got it from Amazon for around $360.00

If it helps, I got a Kenwood DNX 7120 installed in 98 4runner. Used factory brackets and metra harness.

I've got an Eclipse AVN-6620 in mine... Crutchfield said it didn't fit, but after a little tweaking, it fits just fine.

Most standard sized double din units should fit without much modification.

Thats what I thought also, but after doing some research on Double Dins I have found that most companies are replacing their 6" screens to 7" screens for the 2009 models, making the overall width and size of the unit too large for the opening in the dash and too wide to use the stock radio mounts.

What size is the screen and/or the overall width and height?

Straight from Pioneer's website it says that my screen size is 5.8" and the dimensions of the unit are 7" x 4" x 6.5". The fit is pretty much perfect in my 4Runner. No modifications necessary.

There is no depth limit for DIN. DIN stands for Deutsche Institut fur Normung.
single DIN 7.086614173 x 1.968503937 inches or (180 x 50 mm)
double DIN 7.086614173 x 3.937007874 inches or (180 x 100 mm)

If the unit is different than these sizes it is not DIN.

Exactly double DIn is double DIN - screen size should not matter. That said, if the screen is bigger than the Double DIN then do not believe the unit is double DIN

i got a 98 runner and put an alpine 7" touchscreen in it, i got my friends dad (who owns a stereo shop) to install it, usually, you need the little trim piece which acts as a mounting bracket, imo spend the $50 and get it done right!

I have the one you are looking at in my chevy...its a good unit, just a little slow sometimes!! And at night, the thing is freaking blinding on long trips, but you can adjust all that, i am just to lazy too!

This screen fit perfectly in the double din opening in my chevy with no modifications, so If your runner is double din, then it will fit!!

When I went to get the 7" screen Double Din installed they said it would be like 200 bucks to make that one fit. So needless to say thats a big no go

Hmmm I'm thinking about the AVH-P4100 thoughts?

My JVC fit perfect...just make sure to keep the brackets that come off the factory head unit, they mount right on to the aftermarket double-din. I went JVC cause they seem to play Divx/xvid/mpeg a little better then other brands i've used, the codecs play more content then other brands. I can't say that for the pre-out's.....Pioneer/Kenwood go that down to a science.

pictures of all installs just so I can get a great idea of what I'm doing. Another questions that came up is will any aux camera hook up for a back up camera? I like the 4100 because it has aux video in and back up in so I can hook up a in car baby monitor through my head unit and watch where the hell I'm backing, as the soon rear tire carrier impedes the vision.

Buy a kenwood. The video bypass is easier to do, they have more inputs/outputs for video and I personal think the fit and finish is better.

Can you please further describe "a little tweaking"

I'm a big fan of Eclipse stuff, just put their new AVN4430 in my Tundra and have been eyeing up the 726e for the 4runner, so would like to know what kind of work needs to be done to fit properly.
Thanks!

Thanks!
For the AVN-6620, the unit was too long to fit correctly. It would fit in there, but the wires were pressed against the HVAC ducting, and no room for the cooling fan to pull sufficient air flow. I had to space it out about 1/4 inch. This caused interference with the opening in the console, so had to pull out the trusty dremel, and enlarge the opening a bit. THEN, when the face folds down, it hits the shift lever if it is in park.

However, this is all nothing for the quality of Eclipse.

**edit** forgot that most of the newer model Eclipse Navi units accept the factory Toyota plugs, so no wire harness is needed!
