Kenwood DNX5120 Nav System Installed in my 02 Runnner <pics>

I decided on the DNX5120 because it was relatively inexpensive ($599 on closeout-crutchfield), had Garmin powered navigation, and I could match the color to my dash lights (green).

I also added a HD radio module ($99-Amazon), and an iPod cable ($30-6ave).

That looks great in there. I'm sure those 3 pictures don't give justice to all the work you probably put into it, good job.

ooh, ahh...very nice.

Run into any issues along the way, or was it pretty much plug-n-play?

A few issues:

1) I didn't know that the stock radio had a seperate amp, so it took me a while to find where I needed to install my wiring harness.

2) Because I installed a HD radio module, the wire normally used to power the antenna (blue) did not work, so i had to use the the always powered wire (blue-white).

3) Not a problem, but for those of you who decide on a Kenwood - to disable the DVD playback safety just connect the parking brake wire to the receiver ground wire and you are good to go.

I still need to run my DVE disk to calibrate the picture, but so far everything is working great.

Looks sweet man! I just bought a Pioneer Premier AVIC-F90BT... It should be here tomorrow! I was really torn between the Kenwood and the Pioneer, but ended up going the opposite way you did. Was the install pretty straightforward? Where did you put the GPS antenna? Not sure if your unit supports it, but did you use the VSS wire? Oh and lastly, any dash kit required? I'm excited to tear my dash up and put mine in

1) Was the install pretty straight forward? Yes, except for the first two items I listed in my last post.
2) Where did you put your GPS antenna? I was able to sneek the GPS antenna plug between the vent slots in the top of the dash. When you have the center part of the dash removed, you can look in between the two main vents and see the top vent slots. I had to flex it a bit to get the plug thru, but mounting the antenna above the dash gives an instant fix with the nav system.

This pic might help explain it better:

3) Did you use the VSS wire? I don't know what that is, so I probably didn't.
4) Dash kit required? Nope, just bolted it up and it fit perfect.

I have an Avic F700BT. Great unit. If you're into mods check here. http://avic411.com/forum/

I did Mavericksters mods. http://avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=19864

Also got these larger black knobs: http://avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=21115

I will post pics soon. Mounted my GPS antenna the same way, just slip a flexible wire up through the vent gap & pull the antenna wire back through.

Get a wire harness from Walmart to make it plug & play.

I considered the Avic F700BT, but the crutchfield site stated it would not fit in my 4runner. I guess they were wrong.

Yeah, I've been set on the F90 for a while, but I was way confused when I went to Crutchfields site because it said it was double DIN, but said it wouldn't fit. I talked to a local car audio store and their tech said he had no idea why it wouldn't fit. So I went ahead and bought it. Pretty good deal too... I got the F90, which comes with the ipod cable, for $545 shipped. I just wish I would have opted for the 2-day shipping for $5 more cuz I've been waiting a week for the dang thing!

Can't go wrong with the Kenwood though. They are VERY nice units. Your install pics get me excited

Yeah, I've already been looking at that site for a couple weeks now... I already have my splash screen made and know which mods I'm gonna do

Oh and to both of you, I hadn't considered putting the antenna there; I was going to go under the dash, but now I'm reconsidering

I thought about going under the dash, but I didn't want to compromise the satellite reception.

The 5140 is the next gen 5120, I'm sure you'll love it; make sure and get the V301 iPod cable, not the V300. The V301 will allow you hook-up more iPod stuff.

I put a DNX-5120 in my wife's 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe last mont. I thought about gettanother for my 1997 4Runner but there was reciew a couple of weeks back on Amazon that said the DNX-5120 didn't fit in his 1997 4Runner, too deep. I got mine from Amazon for $489 shipped and also got the BT-200 Bluetooth and a PAC SWI-JACK steering wheel control adapter so her factory steering wheel controls still work , even with DVDs.

I wish I would have bought that one. I put a Pioneer double DIN unit in and it's awesome but bought a Magellan GPS shortly afterwards. For the same money I could have this unit. I hate having the GPS on the dash. lol
