will a 4.0l engine work in my 3.4l runner?

I need to replace engine in my '01 4runner and have found a reasonably priced '05 4.0L locally. Is the swap possible?

I've only seen one person do this swap and I believe it was in a 91-92 pick-up. It's doable but not a straight drop in deal.

Anything is *possible* but it is NOT a direct swap. The 4.0L engine was COMPLETELY redesigned, and has no close relation to the 3.4L

If they'll sell the ecu and tranny do it. I think one big headache MIGHT be the ABS getting to jive between the new ecu and existing hardware, also the speed sensor, the tachometer and speedo might be a SOB but if you can get it all reasonably priced, it would be a good step in power.

There are all kinds of issues with transfer case hookup & engine height, not to mention it's a drive-by-wire throttle, plus a host of other issues. Like One_96TR4 said, it was done & the write-up is on here somewhere, but it cost 'em a ton and took a long time & good mechanic. Last I read he was having issues with some sort of binding with the front diff...

Thanks all for the quick responses. After a few hours of research I've decided to continue searching for a cheap 3.4l as I need my vehicle operational soon. I'll post some pics of the existing engine after we pull it and find out what happened without any warning whatsoever, that is if anyone is intersted...

After lurking for some time I had a feeling you'd want pics.....
It may be a couple of weeks, but I'll get them posted. I'd love some what and why answers.

I'd rather mess with going diesel than swapping in a 4.0L V6. Too bad Toyota engine swaps aren't like Honda's.

true that, I have and Acura Integra too and that car can have like 5 different engines easily installed into it...different honda engines that is...same with civics, they can have my motor bolted directly into them and running like a raped ape in like 3 hours...

A diesel would be sweeeet....25mpg is nice...

u can put a new honda civic 4 cylinder engine into an old del sol pretty easy, huh? a buddy at work did it, and man is that thing fast. tho he CLAIMS to have spent 20k on the swap alone... id say he spent 800 on the motor (brand new from honda of poway) and the rest on the suspension. ...if he even spent that much.

$20k? Yeah, right. Unless he's got solid gold valve covers, I don't believe it. A K-series would be around $10k, which is one of those most expensive engines that you can put in there.

Ditto to that! Is it made of gold?
