Why do my wheels lock up when i engage 4wd???

Hello. Have a ? . what would cause my 92 4runner to lock up when i engage 4wd. this happens when i back up never when going forward . When it does happen im backing up in a straight line not turning the wheels at all. I have heard that the driveline is binding but i need to know what causes this. It will also happen when turning right or left when going forward only when turning the wheels to a certain point. Keep in mid this is on pavement and in dirt. Please offer any suggestions you might have. Thanks

with a part time 4wd truck its normal for it to not turn all the way to the side well because theres no center differential(like in all time 4wd cars/trucks) to allow the front and rear wheels to turn at different rates but thats pretty much only on pavement and when turning. on the dirt theres not enough traction to make it much of a deal. i have no idea why your are having the problem going in reverse in a straight line

does it make bad noises, like gear grinding etc thats not normal

also, manual or automatic ?

Can you clarify "lock up"? I'm having trouble picturing what you mean. Do you mean that the front tires stop rotating while backing up in 4WD? like they just start dragging?

Are your front and rear tires the same size and brand? Do they have the same amount of wear (same tread depth)? Our Heep Cherokee had problems when we had one tire warranteed. I could put it into 4x4, but it wouldn't come out unless I did some severe "S" turns to try to unload the drivetrain. Les Shwab said it wasn't the tires, so I went to Costco and bought a new set of Michelins (come on guys, its the wifes DD). Worked great right from the day the new tires got put on.

I would say the front tires are alittle more worn than the rear but not that much. The weird thing is that it doesnt do this when going forward even when turning like changing lanes. Its a 5spd and it kinda feels like the parking brake is on and im trying to drive with it on, also i cant tell if its the front back or both. No noises. If i give it enough gas it will move but like i said it feels like the parking brake is on. Thanks guys for getting back to me on this.

Have you greased all your "4wd" grease points lately?? I think all the grease points on posted on your sun visor.....AND....i have an automatic but i can still feel a little "drag" even when going straight in 4WD....i think this is common in 2nd gens because of the weakness of the 3.0 and when in 4wd it has to turn more parts and wheels.....

But if its only doing it in reverse......then i really dont know what say....

Mine feels more sluggish too. I think most lesser powered vehicles would feel this way, toyota or not, since the power is being directed to more tires now. Harder to get those moving.
