well,
just to clarify what i'm going through with my 86 yota (22re 200k miles) since i've been asking and answering questions on different threads.

bottom line is that the rear wheels are turning while the tranny is in neutral. it wont go anywhere with the wheels on the ground, but with it jacked up, of course, they'll turn. it goes through all the gears smoothly. it also makes a growling or rumbling when the clutch is engaged.

any suggestions as to what i should look for when i pull the tranny (hopefully) this weekend and see if i can find anything. i figure i have nothing to loose. i thought i'd start with changing the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing and turn the flywheel. the transmission guy said he'd give me a $150 break on repairs if i pulled the tranny.

What about when the transfer case is in neutral. Will it move then?

 

My guess is that its fine...probably some residual friction through the drivetrain. Any other symptoms?


Edit: Oops, didn't see the part about the growling. It could be the T/O bearing. In that case, just replace everything while you are in there.

Mine makes a little noise when I step on the clutch but its been fine for 5-6k miles now.

 

Bummer.....When its in neutral sitting on the ground will the truck sit there and run in neutral? Or will it stall when you let out the clutch in neutral? Since its growling i think probably a bearing let go and siezed a gear. i dunno. Pull the tranny and TC as a unit(pretty easy job). When its on the ground detach the TC and take both pieces in for your tranny guy to inspect. Drain the oil first and see if you find chunks.

 

zed, you've got it right. it stalls the engine when in neutral and the clutch let out.

i'm trying to call some friends now to track down a transmission jack. i'm sure i can pull it without it, but i'm all for ease. lol
i'll pick up a clutch kit and have the flywheel turned and i'll let you know what i've found.

You can substitute a motorcycle jack (like the one sears sells) click me to view for a transmission jack as a quick alternative.

good luck. You dont actually need a jack but if you can get one great. Its pretty heavy with the transfer case . If you cant find a jack you can put a 2x4 across the cab so each end of the 2x4 is sitting on the door window sill. And wrap a rope around the 2x4 and the tranny. Lower it with the rope through the floor..
When buying a clutch i would buy a toyota clutch. They last longer than aftermarket clutches. More expensive but worth the money IMO.
