For the 199mm Tundra brake upgrade on the stock 16" 4Runner wheels, are there any type of shaving/grinding needed for the mod?

I have also heard that dust shield needs to be cut to make it fit with the 4Runner wheels. Does anyone have pictures of how it needs to be cut?

it depends. what size wheels do the Tundra have? 16"s or 17"s???

 

From what I have read, most do not have to do anything to fit the 199mm calipers.

 

i've got the Tundra 199mm setup on mine, didn't have to cut or modify the dust shield at all and it clears my stock wheels and my Tacoma wheels, both 16".

 

no dust shield cutting here either. Granted I've got IS wheels, but I did not have to shave or grind the calipers either.

What year tundra brakes are you putting on? (not questioning your move, just for own personal info)

 

If your 4Runner came with 16" wheels then nothing needs done, just bolt on the calipers and rotors. If the 4Runner came with 15" wheels, like mine did, then the dust shields will need the edge trimmed off. I have the same wheels shown above and they clear the Tundra calipers with no mods.

 

Not to be mean--but hasnt this subject been beatin to death?

Search--They are bolt up--the larger (231mm i do believe) are the ones where you will need to trim and grind some.

My question is very specific to the upgrade (199mm) and to the style of wheels (16" three-spoke SR5 wheels).

I searched the forum thoroughly before posting this question and found that depending on the style of wheels (e.g., Limited versus SR5) there could be a need to do some grinding/trimming - so I decided to ask for direct input on this issue.

 

Mine came with 15" wheels that look like the 16" wheels that I posted above. I was going to upgrade the wheels to the 16" wheels since every post in this forum appeared to indicate that the upgrade would not work with the 15" wheels.

I am thus excited to find that you got the upgrade to work with the 15" wheels! Can you share with us how much the dust shields will need its edges to be trimmed off? Also, anything else that needs trimming or grinding, including the calipers themselves?

 

Nope, it all went on just fine with no grinding or cutting.

Mine has that exact setup, no issues, straight bolt-on.

 

I wasn't clear in my first post. I swapped my wheels to the 16" ones before doing the Tundra brakes, they won't fit with 15" wheels. I had to trim the dust shields because my 4Runner came with 15" wheels so the original brakes were smaller, and therefore the dust shields were smaller.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess if I want to perform the upgrade, I will get the 16" wheels when it's time to change the current tires. Also, I gues I can buy dust shields for 16" wheels if I don't want to trim the dust shields that came with the 15" wheels.

 

The dust shields are a lot of work to get off, you have to remove the hubs and press the wheel bearings out, probably destroying them and requiring new ones. It's easier to just trim the edges off.

 

I am running the 231mm set up and i only had to trim backing plate a little, (1/2") supper easy with tin snips. I have no inference issues with the stock 5 spoke wheels.
