What kind of tires did you have on your honda? Unless you had the proper rated tires to hold the speeds you were traveling that was your problem.

I had a camry and always drove fast, 80mph + fast on allt he highways if I could. No spoiler and my car never ever floated around.

On a 4Runner it does what it was designed for. It is called a deflector, as in Dust deflector, It also allows for the air flow of the truck to keep exaust fumes out of the rear by pushing the emissions down and behind the truck.

On cars they are spoilers and yes they are thier mainly for "looks."

There are only a hand full of production cars that have enough power to actually benifit from a spoiler. The Porsh Carrerra has one that is speed activated. Honda is not a product that has a need for a spoiler.

If you think of how the air flows around a truck all the folw is pushed around the rear and then just creates a vacume toward the rear window. pushing dust, dirt slime from rainy days or anything else that is air born toward the rear. You have the same effect with station wagons, and also vans.

Cars a rear spoiler has a down force effect to it. Putting more weight on the rear of the car. They really won't start applying down force till you get up to around 140-150 MPH. That is why Indy cars or Formula ones, even Sprint cars have them it has a huge effect on handleing. TJ

Even witht he propperly rated tire my olds did it all the time...
Thats what caused my accident (granted I was doing the speed limit in the rain) but the back end just desided to lift off...

Moms Lexus does it...
I can't take that thing over 75 without the fear that the back end will lift off and I will end up doin a 180 and end up going 75 mph in reverse...

Also the tires were brand spankin new all around on both vehicles...

They use those spoilers on lots of Station Wagons and SUVs. Fuel economy is the # 1 reason. They have to meet CAFE standards and any little improvement is worth it to the carmaker.

On the exhaust note, all SUVs, vans and Pickups have exhaust that exists out the side, while most cars exit straight out the back. This is to prevent exhaust fumes form being sucked inside the vehicle or pickup shell.

Junk..

I only buy tires after I research them, your entire life is riding on 4 pices of rubber that contact the road about 8 inches wide x 3 inches long at any given time.

Normally I do research trust me!!!
My mother on the other hand...
Not so much...
Hence how we got stuck with those tires...
Stepdad and I on the other hand spent a good week, week and a half reasearchin and getting opinions on tires...
He ended up getting the Goodyears on his and I ended up getting the BFG's on mine...

Before the olds had Michelin Tires it had goodyears and drove quite nicely, as for the lexus, when we got it one of the belts in the tires was off so the ride was very uneven (And was still on Michelins then) and is now...

Give me a couple more weeks of drivin that thing and I would have made it time to get new tires...

But back to topic...
Cause I know someone is gonna yell at us soon!!

I took the spoiler off just for a clenaing once (went to a car wash and was very protective of what was haning off)
And notice that when I got home the back end was a little dirty again (live in the middle of mushroom country here and there is dirt everywhere...)

Plus the looks are great...

And all other reasons stated above for it seem to be accurate...

my little brother and my moms 4runners have deflectors, mine does not. my back window is always dirty, theirs seem to stay a bit more clear. I do wonder if mine being 4wd and theirs only being 2wd has anything to do with that???

Being from Portland, OR, I saw a number of vehicles sporting the revolutionary spoiler. From "whale tails" rocketing off the rears of tiny Honda Accords, to petite "trunk accents" carefully bolted to the backs of ford escorts...these aftermarket enhancements fulfill a myriad of essential duties. The true function of a spoiler depends largely upon the size of the wind-whipping tail rider, and the make of the vehicle it's leached to. A full-size, strapping spoiler firmly gripped to a juiced-up Honda acts as an ominous warning of the vehicle's aftermarket power. Screaming down the strip, with its beefy exhaust and booming system, the Honda proudly dawns its flag of power as if to say: "yes...dude...I bought NOS after watching Fast and the Furious. My next upgrade will be speed decals." For the 135+ pound teen-angler inside, fishing for the one that always seems to slip away, the skyward reaching spoiler is a cry of rebellion--stating: "no, I didn't vote...until Paris Hilton told me to." However, as for the less-than-stellar spoilers that many of the speed limit-restricted cars carry--such as the Neon and the Probe--these tailgate grabbers are merely indicators of wishful thinking. These spoilers do not hug the wind like the whale tails. They do not scream power like the spoilers nestled on the backs of sportier vehicles. These spoilers are meant to be seen, but not heard. For their drivers, the spoiler is a nice option that says: "If you like it, so do I...If you don't, it wasn't my idea." In conclusion, the functionality of a spoiler varies. As for your spoiler, I can only imagine.
