OH boy this thread is going to cause some controversy. I vote for the Bils because I have had good experiences with mine. They are the only shocks I have had on my Runner so cant' really compare them to anything else.

Bilsteins kick ass. Soft enough on the road, but tough enough to take a good off road beating. I'd recommend them to anybody.

I have never been able to find anything wrong with KYB's ...and I have never herd them mentioned on here
... I've had them on the rear for 3 years (the stock shocks seized and folded in half) and they ride great.

Ive had bils on both my vehicles and love them. First mod I did to the runner too. Soon gonna be running the downey adjustables in the front (bilstein shocks) and the rears are HDs (though I don't know if you can get the "touring" valving of the shocks for 4Runners, haven't looked yet). One good thing about the bils though is that they have a life time warrenty. Mine were submerged in water for a few hours a day before easter and they are still running strong!
