What's everybodies preference regarding shocks?

Been a Rancho fan for years but may give the Bilsteins a whirl. What say you all?

Btw, are the front shocks on 2003 4 Runner's struts??

Churnd 08-07-2003 11:32 AM

Bilsteins kick ass. Soft enough on the road, but tough enough to take a good off road beating. I'd recommend them to anybody.

UKMyers 08-07-2003 11:32 AM

OH boy this thread is going to cause some controversy. I vote for the Bils because I have had good experiences with mine. They are the only shocks I have had on my Runner so cant' really compare them to anything else.

Soft enough for the road but not as mushy as the stock shocks ?

Churnd 08-07-2003 11:42 AM

Not at all. I used the word "soft" because most people think of off road shocks as too stiff for the road, but Bilsteins IMO are not.

Same thing here, I have no other shocks in my Runner but Bilsteins. They are good on the road and tough off-road, not to mention the lifetime warranty. You don't have to buy any more shocks unless you are going to lift the rig more than 4 inches, then you need the new Bilsteins with silver colors, I believe they were 5100 series.:bigok:

What are you guys paying for the bilstiens? They're 120 and up each up here.

I have never been able to find anything wrong with KYB's ...and I have never herd them mentioned on here :dunno: ... I've had them on the rear for 3 years (the stock shocks seized and folded in half) and they ride great.

I love my procomp mx6's, but notice one thing with all the shocks mentoned. They are gas charged. I think you can't go wrong with a good gas charged shock.

turboale 08-07-2003 05:38 PM

Ive had bils on both my vehicles and love them. First mod I did to the runner too. Soon gonna be running the downey adjustables in the front (bilstein shocks) and the rears are HDs (though I don't know if you can get the "touring" valving of the shocks for 4Runners, haven't looked yet). One good thing about the bils though is that they have a life time warrenty. Mine were submerged in water for a few hours a day before easter and they are still running strong!

I'm guessing you mean $120 USD? They are $65-70 at PP

Bils in the rear, SAWs in the front...keeps your tires on the road and that's where you want them, they shouldn't be bouncing in the air.:bounce:

Another vote for Bilstein's;

seafarinman 08-07-2003 08:15 PM

I have been running the same set of Bilsteins since 1999. No problems, and I will get the longer ones when I get around to doing my SAS.
