I think they are probably all the same.

Only real diffs were in '92 with the new grille and flush mounted headlights.

The engines and drivetrains remained untouched until the 3rd gen came out in '96.

I have a '90 and I am very pleased with it's reliability. I prefer the looks of the '90 and '91 over any other 2nd gen. Seems to look more aggressive and not as plain.

Have fun.

I am happy enough with my 1995 4Runner.

Did you check something like Consumer Reports to see if their stats show any difference for the various years?

I would guess there is not much difference. Given that they range from 8 to 13 years old, you are most likely going to find that the care along the way is more important than the year of the original vehicle.

They are all very similar and very reliable. As far as the engine goes I know that the 94 and 95 had a slight redesign of the timing belt idler pulleys. I don't know why this was done but it maybe something to make the belts last longer. By the way, I have a 94 with 197,000 miles. Very Reliable!

My 92 has somewhere around 178,000 miles and still going (going well I may add). I just bought it a few months ago so we'll see how long it lasts.

i believe the 93-95 4wd comes standard with ABS. theres a website called www.consumerguide.com that has more details about the subtle year to year changes. for both 2nd and 3rd gen.
