I have a 94 pickup with a 3.0 and a lock-right in the rear. When i installed the locker, i used just regular Valvoline gear oil. I am getting ready to change the oil again in my rear-end, and was just wondering what you guys use? Does synthetic benefit me that much, or should i stick with regular Gear Oil?

Valvoline synthetic 75w-90. I am soon to install a LSD and a lock rite. The LSD says NO synthetic and needs friction modifier. The lock rite end will get synthetic.

The genuine Toyota synthetic gear oil is good, I also use Royal Purple.

 

Amsoil series 2000 75W-90 (which I believe is now the severe series). I use it in all the gear boxes -- picked up an extra digit in the mpg category doing so.

Castrol Hypoy C 80W-90 in the diffs and Syntec 75W-90 in the transmission and transfer case. I don't typically use synthetic in the axles because they get tend to get water and dirt in them sooner than the service interval, so just doesn't make sense since it's changed a couple of times a year.

 

have you extended your differential breathers? (see http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...html#Breathers)

doing so can help keep dirt and water out. shouldn't really be entering anywhere else...everything else should be sealed up.

 

What do you guys think of the Lucas synthetics, or the gear oil? My brother is a farm forman and that is what they use in the tractors and heavy equipment. Just wondering.
