What does this sound like?
My 88 22re has been so damn sluggish lately intermittently. The check engine light hasn't come on but in addition to being sluggish the gas mileage sucks and the idle varies between really low and too high. So I pull the TPS and it's shot so I replace it and clean the throttle body. Right now I'm waiting on the throttle body gasket before I start it back up but here's my question: In addition to all the symptoms listed above the engine would chug/surge whenever the load was reduced on the engine, i.e. when I went from accelerating to a neutral or decelerating throttle position. I'm wondering if this is also related to the bad TPS. From the searches I've done on here it sounds like it may be fixed by the new TPS but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

The engine is a remanufactured with only a few thousand miles. New plugs, cap, timing done when I installed it. I haven't checked out the AFM yet other than to look at the flap. Hopefully the new TPS cures it. Those things are pricey. $103.

Check out your cold start injector, sometimes they can get stuck open and cause the motor to run really rich. Poor MPG, poor accleration, rough idle, and a smelly exhaust are a few symtoms of an incorectly operating CSI.
