on a 96' 3.4 4Runner

I was wrapping up my valve cover gasket and spark plug change, when my ratchet handle got away from me and broke off the plastic nipple for a hose to connect to. I'm holding the hose in the picture, kind pointing to where the nipple used to be. The line runs from my air box to this mystery component. I'm assuming I'll have to replace that entire black box? No, I haven’t found the broken nipple yet, still looking...

 

might be able to fix it with some ABC pipe cement..

 

That "black box" is your charcoal canister. Usually when nipples break off they are stuck in the hose.

 

The hose was disconnected when i broke it.

 

Would you guys happen to know a part number for that cannister?

 

Oooooh...not cheap! $250-$300 part, depending where you buy it.

The part number should be on it somewhere. But, if it's 77740-35391 it's been superseded by the part number above. So 77740-35392 is the only one you're going to get if it's going to be new OEM, trust me.

 

Go to ACE Hardware (or some hardware store) and pick up a threaded to barbed connector, screw it into the hole where the nipple used to be, then slide the hose over the barbed end. Alot cheaper than a new box; about $.97 vs. $250-300. If you worry about the hose coming off, put a clamp on it.

 

You can also check your local salvage yards for a cheap used unit. (Although, like mentioned above, I'd try to fix it if possible.)

Nonetheless, if you choose to search for one online, go to car-part.com. When it asks to "select part", you will not see charcoal canister listed. Therefore, you may want to choose "gas tank" or something else emmisions related. Hit search and start calling them and explain what you're looking for.

I had to replace my charcoal canister on my '02 a while back because it simply failed. Dealer wanted $450 just for the part. I found a used one thru car-part using the search criteria above for only $60.00 shipped. Installed it myself and have not looked back since.

 

I did this on a turbo car that I had where the coolant tank broke the nipple off that fed coolant to the turbo, I put some plastic weld around the barbed fitting to make sure it sealed good and never had a problem.
