Of the 6 3rd gen 3.4 liter auto 4Runner's on the site, MINE has the worst fuel economy! What gives?

It only has 40k miles on it too, maybe it's just not broke in yet...? It's stock except w/ OME springs/shocks and bikes racks on it.

I average 15.1 MPG it says the overall average for the group is 17.9. Sorry to drag you all down!

gosh if you can't afford a 4runner, then get a civic or a corolla.

ive been tracking my mileage from day one. i bought it in 03, its a 99 v6 sr5 4wd. ive had dips as low as 17, but that has been a long time since i've gotten that mileage. i now regularly pull 20.5 and up, some 21s and even an occasional 22, 23. i have a k/n filter and bosh plugs. i run 87 oct fuel, and just drive easy...not grandmother, but i don't launch starts and maintain a steady throttle. i do use cruise as often as possible. now that ive cleaned the throttle body i'm curious how my mileage will reflect it. i can say the response and overall accleration is far better. i also replace the 02 sensor and the MAF. turns out i didnt need the MAF, but with the new 02 and TB cleaning, i wont be surprised if my mileage improves. i tracke every single tank, and will continue to do so. just my $0.02...

I just can't see how my 4Runner can get such bad fuel economy. I could get the same mileage out of a new V8, hell probably even better than my 15.1 average. My 4Runner only has 40k miles, and has been well maintained. I guess the lift, bike racks, and gear always in there could be costing a few MPG.

Oddly enough, my mpg didn't improve after doing a Seafoam treatment on the throttle body and engine... at least the throttle response and idle is smoother now.

Just by looking at your averages, it looks about normal. how could you improve your gas milage any better than it already is?

Mileage etc......... 99 runner auto V6

The stock runner tires throw off your speedo a bit.
I went up a size and it is now dead on with a gps.

I just covered my deckplate and removed that silencer aluminum tube and my mileage is back up to where it was before I messed with it.
**thats with new plugs, o2 sensor, throttle body cleaning and a reset at 92,000.
It's actually amazing since I have not seen 18 + mpg in years.

I have absolutely driven 325 miles on a tank of gas and could have gone on more before filling up.
IMO......The problem with the fill up method is that 1/4 or 1/2 a gallon + or - will throw off your mileage quite a bit depending on yout top off method.

My last mileage estimate was 20.5 highway after covering the deckplate and removing the aluminum tube and a reset. I'll kill a mpg for error and it's still amazing.
Call it a coincidence....but I've been looking at 16-17 at best for a while.
To me it's like throwing money out the window especially since predicitions have gas heading up towards 3 bucks again..
For every 500 miles I drive hwy.......I off road on trails 10. Thats reality!

I get roughly 19mpg. when i drove from salt lake city to Colorado i was getting at 22-25.5 mpg. but that is strictly coasting on the highway.

I get about exactly 300 miles per tank with a supercharger and 275s so I'm actually getting slightly more as the stockers were 265s. You have to take it easy but it's possible. I cruise at about 70 on the freeway and drive easy around town.

You want actual numbers: 360 miles on 16.8 gallons = 21.4285...

I average around 19-21 mpg. I can tow 2000# into the Colorado mountains, driving hard and still get 19 mpg.

I drive moderately, not a grandma nor a hotrodder. I run the 85 oct. gas. Mine is a 5 speed.
yup.

i consistently get around 21 on the highway and check mileage just about every fill-up. 16 inch wheels with standard size tires.

if the mileage drops i will check the tire pressure and almost without fail will be a little shy. keep 'em at 30-31 psi.

city driving will take it down some but the worst i have ever gotten is 17, , , i can't get through a tank with out some significant highway driving.

Update....

Gawd my fuel economy SUCKS! I can't figure out why. Even if I baby the thing it still get's 15-16MPG. It's a 2000 LTD 4WD w/ 50k miles on it.

I'm not sure what I can do to get more fuel economy out of this thing, if it does increase I might as well drive an F-250 w/ the new 6.4 Turbo Diesel, at least that truck hauls more and gets better gas mileage! Really, I'm at a loss, not sure what I can do. I haul around a bunch of bicycle gear with me all the time, and usually my Fire Service Bunker Gear, but certainly not enough to totally kill the fuel economy.

Here's my fuel economy over the last year....

My adivce to increase your mpg is slow down on the freeway and use the cruise control. When you are stopped at a light don't speed off when it turns green.

I use the same tracker and average around 19-21 depending on my work week.

I've tried changing my driving to no avail. It's something with the truck, it sucks fuel.
