Warn Hubs: Spindle Nut Conversion Kit?
According to Warn if you're switching straight from the ADD hubs, you need a "spindle nut conversion kit".
I'm basing the simplicity of the hub switch off the "how to" in the tech write up section. However, the tech write up makes no mention of this extra kit. So do I actually need to spend the extra money for it, and if I do, how tough is the conversion?

Yes for the warn ones u do I dunno what it really does tho...I'd go with Aisins tho, better hubs and you don't need the conversion kit, just unbolt the flanges and bolt on the new ones.

I believe you have it backwards...
When replacing the factory automatic locking hubs with manual hubs, you must also purchase a Spindle Nut Conversion kit except for vehicles equipped with A.D.D.
By the way, I've searched, and this is the cheapest reputable place I could find to order these. I'm thinking about ordering a pair myself this week!

the answer is no. i have a 94 4runner and ran into the same dilemma. just buy the warn hubs from like performance products, thats where i got it. they were like 130 some odd dollars. it was the best mod i ever made with very little effort. DO NOT BUY THE EXTRA KIT.

I've got a '92 with the stock hubs, so I'll take your word that I don't need the kit. Besides, it's easier to buy parts you do need than return parts you don't.

I am on the market for a 1998 4runner 3.4 engine 5 speed manual 4x4.
If I am lucky this weekdend may purchase one, a week ago checked out one but unfortunately was a POS.
The idea is to have some mods. Front ARB bumper, manual hub conversion, steel wheels, rear custom bumper with swing arm for the spare and radios.
I did some of this mods to my 2004 Tacoma, also 3.4 5 speed manual, times are calling for downsizing hence the Taco needs to leave my barn. Truck has only 73000 k miles and I am hoping that the same mods I use to free the hubs will work on the 98 runner.
Will post some pics when done.

Hi there.
I purchased the Downey kit and found a used set of AISIN manual hubs at the yota yard from a 2000 taco (lucky bastard I am).
Yep followed the procedure, new inner wheel hubs, bearings pressed, I reused the axles because I cut / torched the outer joints and got the axles without a scratch!
Downey off road is gone though you can purchase the kit from 4x4Wire in Colorado.
My recomendation DO NOT BE CHEAP and buy new axles, I was fortunate that got mine out in good shape. Removing the axle from the joints is difficult and usually the axles get messed up.
