Hey Guys
I was thinking of putting some new tires on my 2002 4-runner but I drive about 15 miles each way on the interstate. I want Bf Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO's 285/75/16's. Do any of you guys have any experience driving on highways with tires this size what kind of ride or wear can I expect?

You will need to provide some info on your truck, like is it lifted? Stock wheels? etc.. If you are not lifted 285's will rub... depending on the year probably ALOT...

 

BFG's on road manners are subpar compared to my Nittos (experience with both) and after a few years I noticed the BFGs rubber gets very hard and has even less grip on hard surfaces but many translate this into great wear but I personally would rather have a tire that might not last as long but gives better performance during it's useful life. BFGs just become rocks after a few years and they performa like it.

In the rain the Nittos are much better than the BFGs due to their better water evacuation channels and the Nittos are factory siped and do quite well in the snow and have better rear end control than the previous sets of BFGs I've driven on.

Off road the BFGs have the edge but on a DD BFGs are pretty much average and a set would've cost me $200 more than my Nittos did. BFGs are great for weekend warrior trucks but on a DD there's better choices. Nittos aren't perfect (should see about 50k out of them) but they have good grip on dry pavement,solid hydroplaning resistence (much better than BFGs) and are a good tire in the snow and it's hard to beat the bang for the buck.

 

I have a 2002 4-runner 2WD, the 2002 4-runners sat the lowest of all 4-runners so I put the 1999 coils on from Sonoran steel as well as 2.5 daystar spacers. I will post pics buy this weekend I ended up with about 4 inches of lift I don't know if it is too much but I am sitting high. I also have the Ivan Stewart TRD wheels 16X8 0 offset 4.5 back spacing. I was thinking of going with a different wheel but I don't want my stance any wider. Hard decisions.

 

From what I've learned from all the members here who run Nittos, those will def be my next set of tires.

As far as you are concerned, are you prepared for the loss in mpgs and overall power loss you'll find from stepping up from a 31" to a 33"? (I can only assume you currently have 265/70s and stock gearing.)

I plan to upgrade to 33s too, but not for a while. I'm going to run 32"s until they wear out then regear and run 33s. I drive 20 miles one way to work so I don't plan to upgrade to 33s until all my other bases are covered. Just a thought.

 

I've always liked the BFG KO's, as my dad has run them for many years, as well as all his Baja buddies. They work great for everything. I of course, have never tried Nittos or Bridgestone Revos.

 

My BFG A/T I had bad luck with them. I didnt like them in the snow or in the rain there was no where for the snow or rain 2 go.. How ever I did love the lack of road nosie they caused. I didnt get a ton of miles on them eather. My brothers work at les swabs so i was able to rotate my tires alot 2. My best pick for $ and all around. Big Horn Muddys there kinda load tho

Kuhmo AT's
yokohama geolander at II or the newer at-s

both have great ratings for wet and snowy roads, also for grip on dry highways.. i drive about 30k miles a year and i have to have something that will last and my next set come december will be either of the top choices and MAYBE the nittos

 

I run the A/T's. I like them alot. I wheel them extremely hard, and only problems i've had are from airing down too far.

Others have issue with onroad performance, i'm indifferent, but they wear well, and i have a truck, not a sports car. I drive it like a truck. They handle great in snow, and on dry pavement. In rain, i found the fat 12.50's had issues hydroplaning, but the 9.50's i'm running now grip like crazy.
