Auto? If so, crawl under and look at the shifter while someone moves it (engine off!)
Also, go back and check the things you did looking for stuff you might have messed up nearby. You might have done something as simple as knocked a connector loose, messing up the computer's thought patterns. Or it could be those UFOs.....

Betchya it's the number two shift solenoid. Search my posts and there are some lilnks to when the number one went out on me (wouldn't go into overdrive. Pull up my profile (click on my name) and search my posts, there's some links to different articles/papers. Cost (like $145 at the dealer) plus installation...very common problem on the A340E tranny. Good luck!

Ps if it is the number 2 might want to switch em both and then do a tranny flush immediately. I ended up paying $3k and rebuilding mine only to find they hadn't switched out the solenoids and my problem was still there. They finally agreed to swicth em out for free after I brought in the papers listed.

Just a logical place to check with the trannies before rebuilding.

I would start with the shift solenoids as well especially if it does still move at all. The solenoids are pretty easy to check by just applying 12v to them after they are pulled out of the tranny....you should hear a "click" if they are good.

Good document for tranny troubleshooting:

I'm having the same problem with my 90 ext cab 4x4 right now. My codes are 42 and 64. It happened when I was warming up my truck. I think I'll replace all solenoids first in the tranny along with a new filter and oil and see what happens.
