v6 in 96-01 trucks...

i personally own a 92, so im not familiar with the newer trucks, but my buddy wants to get a newer sr5 and wants the v6 for the power. i know the 3.0 sucks in the older trucks, but when did they get better and what motor should he look for? i tried to talk him into the 4cyl, but he wasnt having it hahah. any help is appreciated

'96s started coming out with the "new" 3.4L V6's. I was scepitcal at first, after knowing many with the old V6's, but, I am extremely happy with it!

I too was trying to get a 4-banger, but, glad I didnt.

The 3.4's are pretty darn awesome.

With the switch from the 3.0 to the 3.4 in 95.5 Toyota went from the worst engine they ever made to one of the best IMHO.

The 3.4L is much better than the old 3.0 from what I have seen. Personally, I have a 2.7L in my tacoma and I have no problem with the acceleration that gives when geared to match the tires.

I'd personally go with the bigger engine in a truck, especailly if you're going to be hauling or pulling. 2.7's are still nice, though, if you're just doing some light hauling. Both engines are great. I've got 120+k supercharged miles on my 3.4 and it runs great.

I drove a 3.0L V6 for 12 years and replaced it with a 3.4L. My own experience with the 3.0 wasn't all that bad - one head gasket about to blow, replaced under warranty. It had 'way too little low-end 'grunt', but it cruised just fine. I think the 3.slow wasn't as bad as some people say, but I agree it's the 'worst' engine Toyota put in a truck between 1985 and 2004.

The 3.4L V6 is a better engine all the way 'round .... More power, equivalent fuel economy, and cruises even better ....

Don't look for a rocket out of these trucks. The 3.4 is a great torque engine. Speed...only when geared correctly with the right tires.

The 3.4 is definitely a triumphant engine! WAY better than the 3.0.

I LOVE my 3.4 (I've got the Auto tranny) No complaints. One of toyotas best engines. Except of course the 2JZ and the JZA80's...those things are bulletproof.

LOL yup, I think moving to Los Alamos is what did it for me... the hills here are too much for my little 3.0, plus the altitude sucks my power down to about 100hp

Mmmm, underdrive pulleys good, 3rd gear going 40-45 up the hill bad
