Upgrade or stand pat?

I've owned my 2002 4Runner for ~2 years and love it. I want to stay with a 2002 for several more years.

Right now I have a chance to trade my 4wd with 196k for a 2wd Limited with 97k (both 02s). The 2wd has been babied and is in great shape, but will cost me probably $3,600 difference to get into.

I use 4wd for about 5-10 miles per year during snow trips. If I had a 2wd, I could get to the same spots but wouldn't romp around off the main road quite the same way.

My 4wd leaks at the moonroof, has sticky locks, hole in side of driver seat that bugs me, chew marks from the pervious owners dog, exterior scratches/scrapes, and a few other minor detractions. The 2wd has mint-like seats, upgraded ac/heat panel, premium sound, and whatever else comes with the limited package.

I guess my question is: Do you think it's worth trading in my 4wd for a 2wd with 100,000 less miles on it to get me a solid vehicle for the next 10 years? What info would you weigh that I didn't cover? Thanks!

A couple more tidbits:

My 4wd has new belts and brakes but will need tires soon. It's about to get new gears in the back bc lube shop left the rear diff fill cap off last Sept. and rear diff got majorly fried.

The 2wd will need belts soon (they're cracked), and has new tires. Clean title and original motor, despite having such low miles.

Your trading down plus $3600 bucks?? That makes no sense. Keep the 4wd.

Why? Not sure I am seeing a point to this trade?

What are you getting out of it? A few less miles? Forget that, these things are darn near bullet proof and last well over 300k if taken care of.

The limited extras are just eh for the most part, I have a limited and the only thing over the normal trucks that I truly thinks is nicer is the automated climate controls. Everything else can be retrofitted if you so desire, heck that might be able to as well.

If you go to 2WD from 4WD, you will be sorry.

Thumbs up

3600 will go a long ways to fix the stuff that bugs you on your current ride, and you'll keep 4wd

Heck, spend that 3,600 on another car to use as a daily driver that gets better gas mileage and you will make the money back on the gas savings alone.

Don`t forget to add in the cost of doing the timing belt on the new vehicle could be the reason it was gotten rid of.

I think the hole in the drivers seat is the best reason to get the more pristine vehicle. $3600.00 is a cheap price for a seat without holes and no scratches in the paint.

As you said 4WD is never really needed like with me to get out my driveway most of the winter

Go for it!!

If he wants pristine I say Go for it.

I am still trying to get one whole side of anything I own all the same color.

I think his vehicle plus $4000.00 or so for pristine paint and interior is a win win

For sure not for most of us But if that is what floats there boat go for it.

Just like a 22REC swap into 2000 4Runner most would laugh at the idea of doing that just going the other way from normal.

After all it is just a opinion of a fifth grade grad.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the viewpoints. I've decided to stick with my current vehicle and get some new seat covers. I realized that I like romping around in places where 4wd can save your butt, or someone else's if they're the ones stuck.

Plus, functional and imperfect is more true to myself than pristine and purdy.

See what happens when you get both sides makes it so much easier to think about things.

Glad we could help.
