Upgrade the 4runner *help*

Ok I am tring to figure out what to do next. I currently have a 96 4runner with 211K I got it with 170K, some maint coming up (brakes/tran flush) and now I am putting in a rather intense stereo set-up.

Would I be better off selling this runner and getting into one with 120K miles and black or jade. I know I will keep which ever one for at least 4 years after I get the system in.

I would like to get a black or jade green, but would it be smart to pass the 211K on to someone else or just keep going with it. Bottom line is I will be sinking 2-3K more into my 4runner.

if you can find someone to buy it off you and still get a good deal out of it then do it. if not keep what you got if it has been reliable. but that is alot of miles so its really just a judgment call

I say you already know this truck and what it's quirks and such are. Unless you really wanted to upgrade to say a 99+ for the extra creature comforts, then that might be a good reason to sell and upgrade. If it's just the miles getting you, well you would know your truck best and how it runs. If it runs good and has been good to you I see now reason to get into something you have no clue what it's been through.

That's it. I think I would like the updates of the newer truck. Do I need them? no. Maybe I am just a tight wad about throwing more money into this truck. It comes down to I can afford a new nicer 4runner but I am also very happy with this one I have...

Should I be concerned about my transmission or transfer case at these miles?

Thanks

why sink 3K of audio equipment into a car that not worth much more than that. Thats like these kids I see around here with 78 monte' carlos and cutlasses that aren't worth $1000. Then they put 28" rims and tires on them which are worth almost triple the vehicles value.
My rule of thumb: If your upgrades are more than one fifths the vehicle value, either upgrade your vehicle or downgrade your upgrades.... if that makes since

I have a 2000 Runner w/ 171k miles. I have the same feelings, do i trade/sell and upgrade vehicle or stay w/ what i got? I have decided to ride it out. I have all the comforts available to the newer runners (with exception in improved ride quality) and i have already paid for the accessories/extras. I have it set up the way i want it and no need to swap out.

You're stereo is something that you'll never see your money back from anyways.

If you like your 4runner and it's been good to you and you think it will do another 50-60k+ miles, which with mataince it should, I'd keep that. You don't have to try to sell it, find a new one that you might not get a full history on, pay sales tax, get new tags and so on.

Yeah if it was a cheap POS Chevy Baretta, like the one done the street, with like 3k of stereo equipment in it I'd prbably make fun of you but it's still your car. I've got about $3k of stereo equipment that I am trying to get rid of and I sold $1100 for about $400 so that kind of stuff will always be a black hole where you won't get you $$ back.

If you do the work yourself and plan on keeping all that stuff I'd just put it in this one and if something happens a few years from now to yours pull it out and put it something new or more likely sell it and buy new stuff anyways cause it's cooler and has more features.

There are a lot of hidden costs when purchasing a new vehicle. Tax, tags, emissions test if applicable to you. I'd only swap if you knew you could sell yours high and buy the new at a great deal.

You're not a tightwad if you're spending all that $$ on your runner, if you were a tightwad you'd be saving or investing all that cash. Maybe scale back and do some decent separates, head unit and amp for like $4-500, do the required maintenance and call it good?

Guys you got this "Stereo" Idea all wrong. It is a hobby of mine I do all the work and love every minute of it. Money well spent in my opinion if you like it.

I think my deal is I would like to get a little bit nicer 4 runner...or with a locker or a sport...but this has been a great truck and like it...hummm

If it runs good and is in good shape, I see absolutly no reason in selling it. Mileage is irrelevant if it has been well maintained.

Plus, the stereo equipment can be taken out of the truck if and when you decide to get another truck.

I was a hobby of mine too unitl I got married to my ex wife and then.....well that's a long story. Why do you think I have all this extra stuff laying around. The reason mine cost so much cause I really like sound quality.

You're not really going to net much on a sport besides hood scoop are you? Might as well save that money and you can put a locker and that stuff in.

Sounds to me like you really want to get the newer truck and just want to justify it. I that case I say go for it. This trucks been good to you and it will serve someone else for a little while yet to come. On the bright side if you sell you'll be getting something with lower miles, better creature comforts and newer. I'd see what you can get for your truck and go from there.
