To Turbo or Not to Turbo?
I was thinking of getting the 4cyl TRD supercharger when i saw the EL prototype turbo charger for the 2.4/2.7 engines. i dont plan on doing any off roading due to the distance i would have to travel to get to any off roading areas(baltimore, maryland). I very much appreciate power/fast acceleraton.which one should i choose? when i got my car it had 156,000 now it has a whopping 157,000 and i would think that a supercharger wouldn't hinder the life of the engine. your thoughts are appreciated as always

Supercharger...instant power and relatively easy instalation
Turbo...gotta' wait for boost and the plumming to make it all work is going to be a major pain in the .
The supercharger is going to be more useful in everyday situations. The turbo is going to be more fun.

If it were me, I would go with the turbo. I have been toying with the idea of buying a 2wd Tacoma 4cyl and turbocharging it and adding a whole bunch of other doodads. Here's why:
You can generate a sick amount of boost with turbos. More boost=more power (duh)
A polished turbo looks way cool under the hood. Especially when an intercooler has been plumbed into the works.
A good exhaust manifold will reduce the amount of lag, but it won't eliminate it completely.
The 2.4/2.7 suprizinlgy has a lot of after market parts available. Cams, valves, pistons, etc.
Why a turbocharged Tacoma?
Because I'd like to have the power of some of these ricers but not actually look like one. My 4Runner has lots of power, but I got my azz handed to me by an Acura with a turbo a couple days ago.

something about turbo just draws me to it....i love the sound of a blow off valve and the high pitched whine of a turbo. i think both the turbo and supercharger are the same price.(2,500 big ones).
this kit claims 67% more power at the wheels that would mean i would be pushing 250hp which i doubt for some reason. I need something to blow away all the retards in their civics.

Man, i was just thinking last night about making a thread about turbos(u beat me to it). I was wondering the same thing. I was curious if you guys thought that i was crazy for wanting to put a turbo on my V6. It can potentially put out more power than a super charger and can cost less. What do you guys think?

The only problem is heat and compression. Turbos create a crazy amount of heat. An intercooler would have to be custom fabricated behind the front valance on a 4Runner. But, it would be really cool looking.
Another thing to consider is the amount of boost generated. My friend has a Mitsu Eclipse GS-T (I think), he just put in a new ball-bearing turbo. The turbo creates 21 lbs of boost. He has to use a boost controller to tame it down to 8psi. When he reworks the internals, he'll turn the boost up more. Dished pistons and billet con rods are a must for applications over 11psi. Also, the fuel systems has to be modified; low restriction rail, high flow injectors, fuel pump, etc. Pretty much, everything that has to be done with the supercharger has to be done better with a turbo.
Plus, if you get pistons, con rods, etc, you could add a shot of NOS if your heart desires. Personally, I don't care for NOS. I want REAL engine power, not temporary thrills.
I'm really getting into the idea of buying a 4cyl Taco and modifying it heavily. I'm running out of options on the 4Runner.
I keep thinking of all the possibilities with a Taco.

nitrous is only 750$ for a basic system and i figure that would be kinda fun to mess around with considering 2,500 is a lot more money and then you have to factor in intercooler and stuff. and its probably not worth putting on a car w/ 157,000 mi

The 4Runner is owned by Brian Tragerr and he has since built another one. This time he is having it done right (by another shop) and should be on the road shortly. I'm sure he will let us know when he is up and going. I have head theorhetical estimates of 600+ hp but nobody will know for sure until he gets it running.

hmmm......
dont know about you guys, but does it seem like that engine bay is missing EVERYTHING! there is no cruise cont, no battery, no throttle body!----??? And I particularly dont like that fake ass y-pipe going into the engine with 2 different sized pipes welded at 90degrees..... not to be mean, but it looks like a serious hack job to me-- Ive seen custom piping before, but this looks ridiculous and takes up way too much space:eek: I wish the owner luck when building his next vehicle-- looks like a fun modification to me.
The only thing is, there has to be a ton of internal crap in that engine to make it work-- 8:1 compression, titaniun con rods, double moly heads, knife edged crank and its probably balanced to run at a higher rpms than stock!! Id like some info on whats inside that block -- if anyones got it.
PS-- I just bought a supra MAF from a guy who has converted his twin turbo supra to a single turbo and is running 700+ HP at 28psi without nos!

If anyone is interested, here is the link to see Brian Tragerr's new engine: You have to create an account to see the big picture of it.
It took Maxx Autoworks close to 2 years to build the first one, but the new shop he has working on it only took a few weeks.
I am pretty confident that Brian will be on the road pretty soon with one Badass 4Runner!
