Hi all,

I wanted to get some advice on a problem I have.

This now happens everyday in the mornings when I start up the car so it's something to do with a cold engine.

But I'll drive and proceed through first and second gear and then the engine will rev and the RPMs will climb to about 2500 and my speed will be at 35 mph before I feel the engine settle into 3rd gear. After the truck is warm this doesn't happen.

I've checked my AT fluid level and it seems fine. Is this something that a simple drain and fill can fix or should i be worried about something else?

mine does the same thing only that one time every morning. but ive found if i leave the O.D. on it doesen't do it. every thing seems fine on mine too iv just got a boat load of miles.

It is not slipping. The oil is cold and is affecting the valve body. Also, the ECM will hold the gears at a different RPM until the engine warms up.

Transmission fluid is a misnomer. It is just light weight oil dyed pink.

If it was "slipping" per se, you would notice it more when the truck warmed up.

Mine does it when its below like 40. I just let it warm up so the heater feels good anyway. Just crank it up a few minutes early on cold mornings to start getting heat in everything.

This is normal when it is cold out. Mine does it as well, the clod fluid makes the tranny act a little differnt and like was said the ECU shifts a little differnt when cold as well.

I had to have my transmission rebuilt about 3 months ago, and my 4runner starting shifting late like you mentioned about a month ago. I also thought it was making a quiet but strange noise while i was driving. Just today the noise got worse, and it pretty much sounds like metal parts grinding together. Any ideas what is going on? Did I get my tranny rebuilt only to have it go out on me again? It has 171k miles

Where did you get it rebuilt, hole in the wall places are notorius for doing bad tranny builds.

Completely normal. It is just the electronics holding a lower gear to warm things up quicker.

How many miles on your rig?
Whan is the last time you did a Drain and fill? (4 qts at a time)

BTW: consider adding a few quarts of DEX III High miliage trans fluid...its relitivly OK to mix trans fluid as DEX III is DEX III. Yet, the high miliage stuff has some more additives friction modifiers that may help ease up your issue.
