For one, what tranny do you have, what motor, what vehicle. Now does it do this all the time or sometimes. How does the fluid look-smell. Is it low or ran low lately of fluid? Let us know to better help you

ok thanks its a 99 SR5 with the 3.4 its the 2 wheel drive so its the A340F i think yall can correct me if im wrong but the fluid has about 4k miles on it so its pretty much new and it happens everyday all day and this has been happening for about a month and a half and i havent had time to bring it in to get it checked
and another thing that is confusing if it was the solenoids would the check engine light or something on come to let me know that something is wrong with it?

Maybe, maybe not. There can be electrical or circuit problems with solenoids and there can be mechanical type problems (like a clog or a sticky valve).

The FSM shows a test for solenoids, but you have to drop the tranny pan to do it.

Sorry I can't be more help, I've never had any tranny problems with these Toyota trannies.

Apparently the ECU has a way to detect some mechanical problems too. http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1996/SIL/...t/cip0750p.pdf

If I were you, I'd read though all of the FSM auto tranny info I could, especially the diagnostics section: http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1996/SIL/index.html

Have a look here, mainly the first chart: http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1996/SIL/...t/cip0753p.pdf

Doesn't it sound like you're in fail safe mode? When you go through the manual shifting does it feel like you are going from 1st to 3rd to OD?

Thats what i was going to suggest. Sounds like his transmission computer may not be working and he is having to manually through the gears to get going. I had to do that for a little while with my A340H that was in my 88 but came out of a 95. Starting out in D was absolutely useless because the truck was trying to start out in OD.

This thread may help, maybe not.

I have the same problem, usually when it's cold. When I let the truck coast from reverse to a stop with out brake and then shift to drive I don't have the "tranny problem" I suspect a leaking rear axel seal is gumming up the rear drums. IDK?
