What size sockets do the plugs on the manual tranny take?

How about 22 or 24 mm?

I would be impressed if you have standard fittings on a Toyota.

24mm. There's nothing on a Toyota that uses a 22mm (at least that I know of).

My manual tranny only took a little less than 3 quarts. Manual says it holds 3.2. Tranny was hot and on level ground. Anyone else replace theirs lately and it take less than the book says it should? Must not have gotten it all out cause its right at the filler hole.

Oh, and my buddy's 15/16 worked just fine.

Sounds like mine. My transmission holds just under 3 quarts after a total drain.

My t-bar bolts are 22mm which means the tranny and axle drain and fills are 24mm by process of elimination. FYI, the low pro drain plugs for the diffs are a PN for tranny plugs.

I would be equally impressed if he doesn't round off the head and/or bust his knuckles in the process.

Using SAE on metric fitting is just begging for trouble.

Some SAE sockets work equally well on a metric. I think 13/16 is the same as 17mm. I found that out when installing Hella auxillary lights and the manual said use either one. It was true. I needed a 17mm deep socket and I only had a 13/16, so that's what I used. It fit exactly.

However, its a lot more practical to forget about using SAE on a Toyota. Buy some good metric tools. Consistently trying to find the right SAE on a metric vehicle is not practical in my opinion.

BTW, my tranny uses a 24mm drain and fill plug. Whatever size yours is, use a 6 point instead of a 12 to avoid rounding the head.

I use 15/16 on mine too, do you guys have magnetic drain plugs on your transmissions? I have magnetic ones on the transfer case, front & back diff., but not the tranny...

I wonder what the reasoning was behind this? to me if it had a magnetic one, it'd be a lot better for the transmission

I would assume the mag ones were factory. The non mag ones are more than likely AFM stuff due to stripped plugs or lost ones. Thats my A$$umption.

Usually. When used on 12-point nuts & bolts they are essential. I have quite a few of those on my engine because they are much more difficult to round off than 6-point.

I use a 24mm, 6-sided socket on mine, 15/16" is also close enough. I've converted my remaining plugs over to the low-pro plug with the 10mm socket.
