Unhappy Transmission Parks, but does not Reverse or Drive

Hi guys.

I have a 2001 4Runner Limited 2WD 3.4Liter A340E
I'll start off with the problem right now, then i'll describe how it happend if you want to keep reading.

This is my problem: I start my 4runner and everything seems good. As soon as i put it in Reverse it starts making a grinding/rattling sound. It will do that noise in all gears (Reverse, Drive, Neutral, and even when i put it back on Park). When i put it on Reverse or Drive and step on the gas, the engine reacts normal but the car doesn't move It is not stuck on Neutral because when i put it on Park, it DOES lock the wheels. I cant find anyone with the same problem online or anywhere. Any suggestions or advice? i really don't want to take it to the dealer or AAMCO !

This is the story: It started when i felt it struggle to shift into the last gear(my 4th gear/ overdrive). It would delay a bit and then you'd hear a "thump" and you'll feel it too as it shifts into the 4th gear. Then it just started making that grinding/rattling sound when it was in that last gear /Overdrive. The check engine light came on and it read code P0755 "Solenoid B". Meanwhile i looked into this, i would drive with O/D OFF so it would not make that noise (it only made that noise after it shifted into overdrive). On Sunday my mother called me for ride so i was on the freeway on my way to pick her up. i was going 70mph and decided to turn the O/D ON to hear the noise and as soon as the overdrive kicked in the car felt like it was on Neutral .. I took O/D back OFF and it still felt like it was on Neutral. The noise was now on the whole time. I was lucky to be able to coast off the freeway and towed 4runner home.

Suggestions on what to look for or at would help a lot! Thanks guys !

fluid level is good. No leaks. Fluid is good and none of that milkshake.
It has 207k miles on it. This is the first major problem i'm having with my 4runner. I've had it for 5 years now.

I agree with dropzone, sounds like a torque converter. I had one go out on an old maxima that I had with the same symptoms. Unless you like working on transmissions, you'll probably have to take it somewhere. Good luck

So it turns out the overdrive on the transmission busted and it messed up all the other gears inside. It's cost me $2500 to rebuild my transmission.
