Unhappy Tranny problems

I'm trying to get some help for my 99 4runner. I noticed that my auto tranny was slipping. When I pulled over to check it, it died and I can't start it. Is their some sort of safety switch that prevents me from starting the 4runner until the tranny is addressed? If its a matter of low fluid, how do I know how much to add if I can't start it? Any ideas would be appreciated. Nick

I'm no mechanic so take the following w/ a grain of salt. I first would start w/ checking my tranny fluid if you really think this is the reason that your truck won't start. There is a line, which shows what level your tranny fluid should be when cold. If it's low according to the line, add fluid.

Tranny problems

Thanks, Edwin. I thought that meant cold like if you just started it. I thought the 4runner had to be running to check the tranny fluid level. No? Nick

To check it properly, it should be running but if can't get it to start, you should try this first. There's also a post on the proper way of checking this fluid as you don't want to under or over fill. I'm sure somone with the proper info will chime in.
