Tranny Differences
In looking for a transmission for my 99 4runner I found that there is something different between the pre 5/99 and after5/99 made 4runner trans . Was told by one place it is just a wire harness that I could cut and splice and by another that it would not work . Mine was made 5 or 6 of99 and I can't find the later trans no where in my state . So if I get the earlier version will it work ? Thanks
Just need to get thhis figured out so I can get it fixed to haul the 2 horses to rodeos until I find the right truck for the right price .

How many '99 tranny's were made post 5/99? I got one of the last '99's available in June '99 (2000 models were coming in the next few weeks and there was a sale) and it was built in March. I bought it literally off the truck--they were still unloading it when I signed the papers. (I really wanted a manual). By June, I would think all transmissions produced were going in to 2000 models. It doesn't make sense to change a design for a week or two of production.
Why would you be unsure if it was made in May or June? Can't you just look at the data plate? What does it say? If they did change that late in the year, you'd think it was just early adoption of the 2000 design. Won't a 2000 work?

mine is a 6/99 and every shops even dealer says that a pre5/99 trans is different , not sure why they change it like that but they did . I am having one hell of a time finding one . I found a bunch but all are the pre 5/99 made and they claim it will work with some rigging of a harness or conector . Not sure on that so that is why i posted to find out if it is true . if it will work i can drop one in with a 6 month warranty for about $300 total

I think '99 and '00 Limited 4runners had different trannies than the SR5s, Highlander/Sports, and base models. The '99/00 Limiteds had the multi-mode 4x4 system but the other trim models from those years did not. Not entirely sure if the difference was all in the t-case or not, but I would guess that the trannies are different too.

Try Blevins Auto Enterprise in Roan Mtn. (423)-725-2203. I know someone who has gotten t100 parts from there before.
I do want to see a pic of the 4 runner pulling the horse trailer. If anyone was a candidate for an external tranny cooler, you must be since having to tow at least 5000 lbs+. And the 4 runner is only 2 inches longer than the minimum required wheelbase of 114 inches to tow a horse trailer. Just think diesel.

Try Underwood Auto Salvage right outside of Knoxville. (866)-922-7499. A friend, who works at Gander Mountain, got a transfer case there while studying at UT. Also have a friend in Clarksville, I'll see if he knows of a yard that may have one....
