I already ordered the ebay link you posted.
Still deciding if I want to run the tranny fluid through the B&M first, then through the factory, then to tranny....or through the factory first...
still reading up on it...

I do think I'll be okay with 4k lbs total as I have also already ordered a reese weight distribution hitch with anti sway cams...so I should be good to go.
Run the fluid through you factory cooler then the B&M then back to the trans. If your runner has a tow package it should be prewired for a brake controller all you would have to do is splice the controller wires to the runner wires according to the diagram.

Okay, the B&M cooler showed up today while i was replacing the lower ball joints and tie rod ends...

I have been reading lots of previous threads on the cooler install...like this one here....https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...l-pics-115328/

on this install, it looks like the cooler is installed a few inches OFF of the condensor.
From what I understand, you dont actually want this...you need to have the cooler right up against the condensor so that the engine fan will pull air through it.

Is this correct?

I plan to use the tie wraps through the condensor, and will attach by pulling the upper radiator hose and unbolting the radiator and leaning it forward...giving me access the back of the condensor.

Is this right?

Then, what is the best way to orient the cooler? Barb's facing down? Facing up? To the side?

I have a new Koyo radiator, so I plan to plumb in the B&M AFTER the radiator and then back to the tranny.

Also, from what I understand, the return line is the one to the rear on the tranny? And the out line is towards the front?

Finally, does anyone have pictures of a 3 way connector install inline of a temp gauge? I really want to be able to see temps, and this is my best bet seeing as how I have a 97.

lots of questions, but would appreciate any feedback as I plan to tackle this tomorrow

it is definitely longer than the runner itself...no question.
However, I think I'll be fine with a weight distribution hitch with anti sway cam's.

anyways, we'll see in a few days when we make the 800 mile trip up to the mountains of western NC

got the brake controller, wd hitch is on it's way, tranny cooler arrived today, changed lower ball joints/tie rod ends today, still need to change diff and transfer case oil....

Hey Matt-

That is correct....you get the best cooling right up against the condenser.

I never thought of tilting the radiator forward to tie rap directly to the condenser....but if that works go for it. I mounted my Hayden 678 to the front of the condenser also but I weaved the tie rap both the condenser and radiator. I made sure not to pull them too tight also.

Barbs should be up or sideways.

I have an 01 Taco with the 3.4 auto...it's the driverside radiator connection that you want to extend to the ext cooler. 4runner guys correct me if Runners are different for some reason.

My sensor is on the tranny pan....but if I had the chance, I would have preferred the 3 way on the output of the external cooler. It would be a more "dynamic" reading and would change temps if you start going up a steep hill and such...more responsive I think. The 3 way means you have to figure a way to run a ground connection for the sensor. Take pics.
Thanks
ZUK

well if you can just run a tie wrap through both the radiator and condensor at the same time, that would be a lot easier.
I had read about warping the radiator/condensor if you did this.
However, it seems that if you just dont pull them too tight, that everything will be okay.
I think I'll do that then.

and on the factory radiator it sounds like the output line is on the drivers side?
maybe a 4 runner owner will chime in to confirm?

thx for all the info, I'm getting to work right now

damn, another question...

on the B&M cooler, I guess there isnt a specific input and output on it?
Meaning it doesnt matter which side you use as the input or output?
I'm routing the hoses and mounting it now, and cant see any way to identify on the cooler which is which.

Also, I have been seeing different opinions on orientation. Most I'm seeing are either barbs facing up or barbs facing sideways?

I would think that orientation is unimportant on these coolers....right?

trying to get this done on a sunday afternoon can be maddening..

edit...in the instructions that came with the cooler, there is no mention whatsoever of a specific input/output nipple/barb OR about how the cooler should be mounted (barbs up, barbs down, etc)

this would seem to indicate to me that neither are important or apply?

logically speaking that is....

For the easiest install, barbs sideways. People argue which inlet is IN and OUT; with the barbs pointed down when you pull it out of the box, I used the left barb for IN and the right for OUT.

This is overkill, but should answer all your questions. Page five begins a nice temp sensor install:

hey, yes i had already read through that entire thread before tackling this.
Nowhere on the cooler is there any indication of which side is in and which is out. Nowhere.
How anyone can argue over this is insane. both sides are identical in every way, and even B&M says NOTHING about one being in and one being out.
so, i went ahead and mounted it sideways, and hooked up the rubber lines with no regard to one being in and one being out.

after installing this cooler, one question has been on my mind...

the new cooler is much higher than the radiator, and I would imagine that this would require a lot more work from the transmission hyd pump.

does this put a strain on the trans pump over time?

I wonder if this will prematurely wear out the pump?

Matt,

I could not have done any better myself. Looks good.

Have you ever cleaned out those fins on the condenser? Use some compressed air or a garden hose on it to clean out the crud.

ha ha, yeah i was looking at those dead bugs in the condensor, and was wondering how I could clean it out without damaging the fins...
I would think I need to hose it from behind? which would mean leaning the radiator forward to expose the back of the condensor...

but yeah, the truck seems to drive normally, with the tranny shifting fine and everything.
Now I just need to figure out a temp gauge set up

funny with the new lower ball joints the steering is quite a bit lighter...
