total newbie exhaust sound question

I'd like my 4Runner to have a nice, real deep throaty sound but don't have the $$$ for a full cat-back. If I just get a new muffler will it give me the type of sound I want? I don't want it to be super loud, just a nice tone.

Also, I was wondering how the sound is on the freeway. If I get a new muffler and cruise down the freeway at 70mph will it be blaring inside the cabin?

I know, I know, total newbie questions but I am totally new to exhaust.
Thanks

it all depends on what muffler you get...... i liked my old magnaflow better than my current flowmaster 40... on my 4 cyl though, its noticeable all the time, but i like it liek that....

taylor,

you will definitely have to search on this topic. there is a wealth of info and opinions out there that you really have to sift through to get a "sense" of what people like and dont like about any particular muffler.

That and you can check out the Yotatech on the web section here:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f63/

You can find a round up on mufflers among other things on this page.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I was most curious about the freeway thing. I like the deep sound but don't know if I want to listen to my 4Runner clear its throat for 5 hours on a rod trip.

Thanks

From my experiences, you'll have to run a dual can setup to minimize the 'droning' that is common with replacement exhausts. You can still get the nice throaty sound on acceleration...it won't be as loud though.

By dual can, I mean the setup is basically like this:

Cat...pipe...first can...more pipe...second can...tips.

I had no idea there was a Yotatech page with all those exhaust sound clips, that was amazing! So far I think I like the Flowmaster 50 SUV, nice deep sound without getting crazy on the rev's.

I get my tax return check it 2 weeks, I'll let you know how the install goes

Add a resonator to the tailpipe. The larger diameters give a lower tone.

I have a magnaflow 18" and it has no resonation in the cabin when on the freeway, if you want to go just a little bit louder, get the magnaflow 14"... lots of people on here have been happy with magnaflow mufflers

yeah, i have 2.5" catback into a Magnaflow and 2.5" out of that. I noticed a difference in sound right away. Didn't do too bad at adding a little power too

okay, after reading a lot on the web today I've got it narrowed down between the Magnaflow 18 and the Flowmaster 50 Delta. It all depends on price now.

check this thread out https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f123/what-exhaust-do-you-think-loudest-57250/

I decided on a Flowmaster 40 series muffler with a Magnaflow high flow cat (2.25")
You can get them on eBay for pretty cheap including the 50 series that you mentioned. Then just take it to your muffler shop and have them "make" the rest.

Well, I have two trucks with 3.0s. One has a glasspack, and the other has a Magnaflow. The Magnaflow is quieter, but it sounds deeper, and has a cool "turbo sound." The glasspack is considerably louder, and sounds good until you hit about 3000 RPM, and then it sounds a little ricey. The Magnaflow, in my opinion, is a good compromise between a good, deep sound, without being really annoying on the highway...

I got the 50 Delta, great sound. At first I didn't like the little drone but now it doesn't bother me at all. At freeway speeds you can hardly tell it's there.
