Torsion bar question

Hey all,

I was just wondering - how can you tell an OEM from aftermarket Tbar?
And what's the difference?

If there are surface cracks in the Tbar is it time to change out?

I wouldn't trust them.

Um, yeah, that's not good. Buy some used stock ones, I'm sure somebody's selling. You'll have a better ride and better articulation.

I don't think I have cracks - I have what looks like scratches though. I just remember hearing someone saying something about cracks being bad.

yeah, this is one of those :pat: questions, isn't it?

It didn't sound right that you had cracks yet no failure. If you actually had cracks, I'd expect the spring to catastrophically fail.

So springs would fail before the Tbars?
What springs?

peter, i think what steve means is the t-bar would fail. the t-bar is a type of 'spring'. it does its thing by twisting instead of compressing like a coil spring. hope this helps.

Most of the after market bars are 25mm or 26mm diameter, my stock were 24mm. My Downey bars have "Downey" printed in big print on the side of them.

Cracks? Change them quick!

Cracks are highly unlikely on a torsion bar. Unless they've been excessively cranked to the max and jumped 10 feet in the air they're not going to crack. If a crack does form you can easily determine how long it will take to completely fail by blinking once.

Yeah, I figured...

I was mainly interested in the OEM/aftermarket part of the question.
Mine are white, I remember a discussion at Pismo 2 and someone mentioned that they had not seen white T-bars before.

Or did I hear wrong?
