I was wondering if there is someway to make a switch to keep my TC locked up when I'm on the highway? I know on some other trannies that are electronically controlled you can do this but I have not heard anything about this for a 4runner.

 

Can it be done? Yes, but not without setting a DTC and most likely turning your CEL on.
I'd recommend leaving it alone. It turns off for a reason. If I was to guess, the clutch(s) related to 4th gear would suffer from this type of mod. I can't imagine you'd gain any MPG from this either.

Just curious, why do you want it to stay on all the time?

 

yea.

I put on some 285 75 SSR's (measure 34" tall) and on some hills that it doesn't need to it kicks out of TC lock and brings the tranny temp up pretty good (past 180 and below 210) but it would just be nice and it would kinda act like a manual tranny some what then since I could lock it and un-lock it.

Are our transmissions fully electronic or what?

 

yup fully computer controlled and integrated with the engine control ecu

manual transmission just have sensors sending the current states to the ecu

 

Sounds like you need a tranny cooler, and a regear.

 

A regear would be nice but then I would want a locker, then I would want to wheel it more and so on and so on... This is my DD and weekend wheeler sometimes. I have a jeep that I normally wheel but when its broke and I need to fufill my wheelen urg this will take care of that so I don't want to spend to much money for wheelen in this thing...

 

IIRC, you can cut the wire to the lock-up solenoid. Next, terminate the cut wire to ground through a 5 OHM resistor to complete the circuit and make the transmission ECU think its still connected to the soleniod. Then you can wire 12v through a switch to the lockup solenoid. This setup should be very easy to do and will give you manual control over the lockup solenoid. Its unknown if the lockup circuit talks to other circuits resulting in a trouble code and a dash warning light coming on? Try it, nothing to loose and be sure to use inline fuses to protect from a dead short. I think you will get tired of switching the OD manually in a day or two.

I tried searching but could not find it. Wasn't there someone on here that did some sort of mod relating to that? You could manually lock it with the push of a button. I'll try and keep searching then post when I find it.

The guy quit making the kit and was supposed to post the electrical schematics as open source for anyone to use, but apparently took the site down. Bummer, I wanted to make one myself.
