which tires would you recommend?

so i live in Canada and this year so far we've received about 410 cm of snow. Or about 160 inches of snow. For the summer however i DO NOT do any offroading but i was thinking of getting all-terrain's because i could use them for summer + winter.

But now i'm thinking about getting dedicated winter tires + highway tires for the summer for smoother rides and better fuel economy. IF you were in my shoes would you get all-terrain's or dedicated winter tires?? which are better for snow?

Dedicated snow tires will do better than A/T's in snow. Now, I'm not talking deep snow, but 6-10 inches. If you're not going to do any off-roading, I would just get another set of rims to put the snow tires on, then get some all-season tires for the summer. You will have a better ride and the tires will generally last longer.

yea that's what i was thinking as well. It's rare that i'll get myself deep in 18 inches of snow like we had yesterday so there's no need for an all-terrain. So what you're saying is that all-terrains WILL do better in deep deep snow then winter tires??

I'd get some BFG all terrains myself. No changing to deal with. Will last a good while. I think I put over 60k on my 265/75-16's that I had on my taco, and they are now on my friends 87 4runner and still going. These are good all around tires, great for everyday driving, mild off roading and snow. I know I plowed through many inches of snow in mine without a problem. When the town was shut down I made it everywhere. They make your truck just look better IMO. Good luck.

I just put BFG AT's on my 4Runner, I highly recommend them. Amazing snow traction, they are as good as any snow tire I've ever had. I could be wrong but I think they are legal to dive on roads that are designated as chains required in the winter, without chains.

all chains are illegal on ontario roads..
i got 31 inch bfg all terrains and they rock in the snow..they are the best snow tire that isnt a "snow tire".. i would go with these.. i use them as my canadian winter tire and i have 32 inch mud kings for summer offroading

Tires and snow

Well I'm no longer in Colorado but was there last year 2006/2007 with lots of snow and went exploring all over including the high country. I have the Bridgestone Dueler A/T REVO with UNI-T AQII and never got stuck as well did not see a decrease in gas mileage. I cannot recommend these tires enough. I have driven the truck all over. Hope this helps

Wow...given the pictures I've seen of the snow fall you're talking about (via your snow pics post)...I'd almost have to say go for a mud terrain. It doesn't look like you get much ice, and thats where they suck at...but for snow like that...a mud terrain might do you better...

Maybe someone with more info will chime in

x2 on the BFG AT's. great traction both snow, offroad and pavement. they are quiet on the highway and they last awhile. currently have 50k on mine and i'll make it to this fall with no problem (another 10k). then they will go on my woods truck so i can get new ones for the winter. highly recommended

Really winter tires are better on ice. That's their job. A good A/T tire will do just as good in snow as any winter tire IMO. My friends jeep has 33' Mud kings on them right now and they're great in the snow but as soon as you hit ice... all over the place. I think this depends allot on weather your rig is 4WD. If it is just go with the A/T and the 4WD will help enough on the ice for what you need. If 2WD your safest bet is to get two sets and just buy some cheap steel rims for your winter tires. My two cents anyway.

For this guy's situation, I still think the snow tire + A/S tire combo would work the best. BFG's aren't the best handling or the most comfortable ride on the streets, especially compared to A/S tires. He said he never goes off-road, nor does he plan on it for the future. Snows will perform much better than A/T's on ice AND light-hard packed snow. Keeping this rotation, he will see a lot of miles before he needs to buy new tires.

I got the Nitto Terra Grappler A/Ts on my truck and I have to so I could not be more pleased with them. They are quiet and very responsive (almost as much as my low profiles I had on 17" rims on a car) on the street, rain is no problem (much less hydroplaning), and we just got about 6 inches of snow that then turned into ice/slush/mud that I was driving all around in on a buddies farm and on the roads and they handled it beautifully. I would recommend them to anybody.

If you never off road then any A/T tire is a poor choice and the Revos might be a better fit.

If you absolutely have to have a solid A/T tire for snow and dry pavement it's hard to beat the Nittos and compared to BFGs (from my 10+ yers on BFGs) the Nittos are much more composed and predictable in anything wet and they have a 50k mileage warranty and cost about $200 less than a set of BFGs.

The only reason i would get A/T tires is simply for cost issues....my all seasons right now are on the verge of minimum standard so i will be needing new tires this spring. So with that in mind i can buy 1 set of tires being the A/T that i could use in the winter as well OR i can buy another set of all seasons (quiet, smooth, lasts long and i never offroad) and then buy another set of winter tires before next winter.

i really want the best peforming tire in the winter. So if the winters ARE that much better then A/T in the snow i'll get the winters. If they are only marginally better then i will probably get the A/T because it will save me a lot of money.
