Tire "Road shock" problems?

Well, I am back again. I have a '99 Taco with BF AT KO 265/75 16's on Toyota Alloy rims, switched from Bigfoots on American racing black rims. Whenever I run over a bump of any size my steering wheel vibrates back and forth for about 2-3 seconds. This happens at any speed. If I am on a road that is very smooth, everything is fine all the way up to 85 mph. I don't see how it could be a balance problem since it will not vibrate at all on a smooth road. I have been told it is "road shock" and it is normal. I have also been told that Tacos are "very sensitive" and you should not put anything but factory size tires on them. Anyone have a more reasonable explanation. Thanks.

Maybe the steering stabilizer shock is worn out? The factory ones always seem too small to me.

I had a 98 Taco and never had this problem. Sounds fishy.

What's the tire pressure??? Sounds like they could be overinflated.

The pressure is 45 all around, the first thing I checked.

How would you check the stabalizer to see if it is bad?

Drop them down to 40 PSI for starters. 45 is too high.

I was told by the local Toy shop the '99 Taco idoes not have a steering stabalized. They also think my rack and pinion are possibly bad. Only $900 from Toyota, such a deal. Ha, ha.

yotaPagota,
besides dropping the tire pressure. You may also want to check the steering rack bushings.

I had the big foots. They're great tires. They do not compare to the BFG's though. The BigFoot is much more value oriented, and isn't nearly as aggresive. Unless you're talking about the BigFoot XT, i'd go with the BFG.

45 is way too high. I would say 35 max if you can handle the harshness if not keep going down until you get to the manufacturer recommended psi.

As stated, the Tacoma does not have a steering stabilizer.

You can get your rack checked out by getting a wheel alignment, which I would strongly suggest to eliminate any worn suspension parts as causing your problem.

Thanks for all the great ideas. The quest is officially underway.
