Timing Belt / Water pump $$ how much?
#21
Yes, I knew it was missing the rear cat and it was 'as is'. I guess in PA all you need is a pipe. I saw the truck on Ebay and called the Toyota dealer in Scranton, PA. I took the hour ride from Newburgh, NY and after a little haggling, settled on 6 grand. At the time, the truck had 111,000 miles on it. I installed a new cat and the 02 sensors and the check engine light turned off and it passed NYS inspection.

You're absolutely right Zach, that's why I am going to stop over there tomorrow to confirm that price. The service writer told me $587 for the water pump alone and $687 for the water pump and timing belt ( I hope). Firestone quoted close to $900 but like you said, $687 is a steal and I'll get that in writing tomorrow. I actually bought the truck from Scranton Toyota for $6000 but it was missing the rear cat. This is my 4th Tacoma (all first gen). I'll post a follow up along with a pic of my radiant red Tacoma. Thanks for replying.

Newburgh, NY, Toyota. I went back to see the service writer today to confirm that price and she hand wrote it on the quote for $681.00 plus tax for the water pump and the timing belt. I called another Toyota dealer about 10 miles away and their quote was over $900.

I bought it and drove it home. The PA inspection sticker was still valid but I removed the pipe and put on a rear cat and an 02 sensor and to my surprise, the check engine light went off so I registered it and had it inspected in NY. If only I can get the front cat from rattling, I'd be happy. I thought it was the heat shield but I guess it's time for another one.

What did she write down? All the included services? I mean are they replacing all the typical stuff, like tensioners etc?
You can tell I'm still having a hard time believing...

OR you could make friends with a guy that works at the dealership and has access to everything and the skill set to work on it..I work for Toyota and did mine with water pump, t-belt, oil change, valve cover gaskets, cam seals, and spark plugs, for just under 400..but mind you, I did the work myself. But there's a lot of guys out there that will work for beer! Hahaha just my $.02

She wrote $681.00 plus tax. I made it a point to ask if labor was included and she said yes. If there was a mistake , it's on them. I have it in writing. I wasn't trying to pull a fast one, I was shopping for the best price.

Cool. Yeah that's what I meant, just making sure all the usual stuff was included in what she quoted you. Like I was saying, my local shop, who definitely charges less by the hour than Toyota, quoted me $900, saying there was a chance it would even go over $1,000. And they're guys I use a lot and trust.
