Hi all,

Looks like I'm finaling a deal on a '00 4Runner SR5 off Ebay. Silver, sunroof, running board, trailer hitch, cloth interior. I think I'm getting a pretty good deal on it...I've been having a hard time finding ones for a decent price w/under 100K miles.
It is at a dealer. Has about 80K miles on it. They don't know for sure if the timing belt has been changed yet or not. I assume this is something I should have done soon regardless for piece of mind, right!?
I'm having the dealer it is at get me a quote to change the belt and am also gonna call around some local places near me. It is currently in TX and I'm looking to have it hauled to me in GA.
What is a good or avg. price to have this work done?

usually when they do the timing belt, they change out all the belts + water pump + thermostat. mine was a little over $500 about 2 yrs back

 

Ditto. Since they've pulled everything apart, you might as well change the water pump so you don't incur additional labor down the road. I would question doing the timing belt at 80k miles as there are many here that wait much longer. You will have a non-interference motor so you don't run the risk of ruining your motor if the belt brakes. Just a thought.

Nope...I'll be paying for it. It wasn't worked into the price of the vehicle.
If it is a non interference motor and most wait till at least 90K I'll wait then.

I was told that Toyota recommends changing all of this:
timing belt (of course)
water pump
drive belts
thermostat
tensioner
idler
camshaft seals
crank shaft seal

Might seem a bit excessive, but for peace of mind and to do the best job possible, maybe?

Opinions?

 

It's on my list of "Things to do" too. Timing belt, upper idler, tensioner, H20 pump, Thermo, and the 3 drive belts.

 

That is for just changing the belt only (ie belt + labor).
It will be closer to $500 if you do the WP and thermostat too.

This list above is an exhaustive list and would certainly be comprehensive but in most cases at 90k miles it is unnecessary. This subject has been covered in quite a few threads, but I myself, at 90k would just do the belt and flush the cooling system (radiator, engine block and heater core) then refill with Toyota red coolant to keep the WP in good condition.

 

I agree with this caveat:

Since I tow frequently, I now tend to do the entire recommended list every 90-100k miles to my 3.4L. Prior to that when I had my 3.0L (with a 60k mile frequency), I would do the water pump every other belt replacement. Although it MAY be overkill, the additional approx. $250 over a 4 year period ( I drive about 25k/year) is worth my peace-of-mind.

Just curious, what doe's the Toyota "Red" antifreeze/coolant have that helps out the water pump?
