Ok so I have a 99 tacoma with the 5vz 3.4 and it's time for the timing belt to be changed and to go ahead and reshim the cams on the driver side. Does anyone have and around about idea of how much this whole job would cost to properly do???

 

Labor to do a valve adjustment is around 5 and a half hours. Is there a reason you want the valves adjusted? Cause unless their making noise I don't know how you'd figure they need adjustment.

 

Yea the motor has about 179000 miles on it and it begin in to idle rough. The noise has been minimal but slowly getting worse over the miles

 

I checked mine at 176k when I installed my surcharger and replaced my valve cover gaskets and mine were fine. I haven't seen too many 3.4's that have needed adjustment. The ones that did were all well past 250k. Is it throwing any codes? Have you kept up on other maintenance like spark plugs and the fuel filter?

 

Yea everything has been keep up I'm about to go ahead and do the timing filters and plugs with and intake manifold gasket because antifreeze is leaking from it. As far as codes I have none

If the cam timing is off then you probably would throw a code. I was just curious as to why you were condemning the valves as the cause for your issues. Just remember to check the valve clearance when the motor is cold. Other wise your measurements will be off.

Ya you should be fine. Like isaid these motors are pretty stout. Ive seen quite a few and heard of a lot more with over 300k.

 

Alright so do you think fuel filter could be a reason for the rough idle with no codes

 

It's a possibility. Also, check your mass air flow sensor. Make sure it doesn't look fuzzy or dirty. Also, how are the spark plug wires? Are they factory toyotas? I've seen issues with all toyotas that people put crap aftermarket plug wires on then have issues with miss fires. Also look for carbon tracks running up the coils and the sides of the plugs and wires.

 

I have ngk plug wires and plugs in the motor so and I have completely cleaned intake system from sensor to the icv and in take

 

you almost never have to mess with the bucket shims or whatever they called. i pulled a head off and they were all in good shape. do the timing belt yourself. it isn't too bad. just time consuming really. looks harder than it really is. i did it and more myself. if you were in vegas i'd do it for you for a 100. i got the same motor in my t100. love workin on it. but i don't get to very often being a toyota nothin ever breaks. lmao

 

Lol I know that feeling I love working on it and as far as the motor it's time for the motor work so just age showing its ugly head

 

haha yea same here. i actually need to do a few things too. new half shafts, oil pan leak. but being a 4x4 i haven't wanted to do it in the driveway. got a new job at the dealership so i got lift access now so dropping the front end wont be as bad. i'll do it all at the same time. might also do a manual hub swap too since ill have all that stuff opened up to pull the half shafts out. my cv boots are blown and have been for some time now.
