I use my Tacoma for work - a roofing company. I am considering selling for a Tundra but have heard that it may not be worth the loss in mileage etc. to go to a slightly bigger truck. Is the load capacity in the bed much different? Is there any way to put in heavier duty rear springs/shocks to accommodate the occasional larger load? I love my 02 TRD 4x4 and its all set up already for work, so if I can keep it great. Thanks for any feedback!

 

A new Tundra will drag your 02 around like a toy.

Seems like a trailer would be simpler.

I dont think that stiffer shocks will do much for your situation. Helper springs might be a good answer. I had a thread a while back about this. If you decide to go with some springs I have seen some good prices on amazon.

Thanks alot! SUper helpful. I ran the numbers and the payload diff between the taco and tundra is less than 100 lbs.... i'm going to get helper springs and keep my nice truck! Now i need to see if i can justify a lift too?

 

you could also put airbags in the back. they will help carry the load when needed and will not lift or effect your ride under normal conditions.

how much of a load are you putting in the back of your Taco anyways?

 

airbags are a bit pricey eh? but a good idea none-the-less. i'll look into it. the other day i had about 1200 back there. payload is 15xxlbs so i was right up near it. drove fine, just the back end was saggin low.

 

Pricey? $100-200 on airbags is nothing compared to parting with your beloved rig and trying to find the right replacement in a timely manner . If it were me I'd go airbags over helper leafs. My dad puts airbags on all his work trucks since they regularly hold drawers loaded with tools, shell, lumber rack, and materials in the back. If it sags, add more air. Only thing to watch out for is overloading the truck since it will be deceiving if you aren't paying attention to the weight you put in (if air already in bags) - airbags will just help hold the weight above your axle, but not your axles themselves or brakes to stop.
