taco 4x4 ingage problem

my buddy has a 96 or 97 (i cant remember i apologize) tacoma V6 with auto hubs. every damn time we go wheeling together (just like over this past weekend) he has a problem getting it into 4 wheel drive. now does anyone else here have a problem with that? or is he just an idiot or what?? now i want to help the lad out, but he insists on doing it himself and wont let me hurry along the process.
not that it takes him more than a minute to get it into 4x4 but a whole hell of a lot longer than it takes me.

have you seen what he is doing? it should be just a press of a button or a pull of the lever, i don't know how that can take a minute. is he doing the steps right its just taking forever to engage?

Is he trying to put it in 4wd while the tranny is in gear/Drive? That takes a bit of finesse to do and is NOT good for the transfercase.

he might be trying to engage 4wheel while the trans is in gear while the clutch is in, but i can not say for sure. it just seems like whatever he is doing, the 4wheel is not cooperating with him. oh well, mine works just fine.

When was the last time maintenance was done on that front dif? Have him just put in 4wd for a couple minutes each day to see if his front drivetrain just needed some lube to circulate.
